the folders you mentioned are uninstallers for windows updates that are already installed on your computer do you use ccleaner on your computer if you have it in the cleaning section check box area under advanced tick the box for hot fix uninstallers this option will clean out any obsolete ones to stop them cluttering up your computer did you locate the software distribution folder and delete what is in your download folder will have a look around to see what can resolve your windows installer issue

I set hotfix and ran ccleaner. I also delete what was in the download folder. (I deleted the whole folder should I have done that or just the contents?

Still getting this error message. However I have not rebooted yet do I need to?

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

    the I check this box
Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

and it goes back to the express install and loops back again

deleting the whole folder wont be a problem when you run automatic updates it will make a new folder just to clarify when you try to update your computer it is unable to locate the windows installer can you in stall any other programs or is it just windows updates also is there an error code

g'day dls4968 sorry that i couldn't help you sort your issue out but glad to see you resolved the problem.with ccleaner me personally i have checked all the boxes with the exception of auto complete form history, this is the way i have configured the program since the first time i installed it. just remember to keep backups in case you need to restore something, although i have never had any problems with it.

I have to say that I had the same problem, and finally after trying everything, figured why not, and plowed thru all the links that ms provides, to where you can send them an email, specifically, if you are having problems with WindowsUpdate, and after about24 hrs, I actually got some lady, in India or somewhere, who *really* helped me, she was back and forth w/email, helping me reset all kinds of file names, and then registry problems, etc...

MG is quicker, and they've always helped me, but I was kind of surprised how helpful microsoft was, in this area, and I had some raggedy old "second hard drive" w/an acronis mirror of XP I was dual booting onto, and *knew* it was something I'd done, but couldn't figure it out: I had two different error msgs everytime I went to WU...

Anyway, just a thought, you can kind of link from Windows Update to "getting help" or something like that, and they'll show you exactly what to do...

    Best wishes...
