After sending in a laptop to Acer repair the day after I bought it, I finally got it back, and found the fan would not come on at all. The machine got very hot when trying to play games, and I contacted their support center.

They said when they "repaired" my machine they replaced the motherboard and that it is possible that their people may have forgotten to plug the fan into the new motherboard.

Needless to say, I couldn't believe it, and they wanted me to pay for the packaging to send the laptop BACK in to their repair center. Which I want to avoid at all cost, especially sense that might mean three weeks without the laptop AGAIN so they can plug in a new fan.

I don't have much experience changing computer components, so I was hoping someone here could maybe walk me through step by step, so I feel little more comfortable doing this.

The laptop is an Acer V3-571G-6407.

    I'd appreciate any help.

It sounds like your machine is under warranty, and if it is and you try to repair it yourself, you will void the warranty - you aren't an "authorized service center". What I'd suggest is contacting the Support Center again, and demand to speak to a Supervisor (demand "nicely", e.g., be insistent that you speak to the Supervisor. Make sure you get the Supervisor's name and contact information for that person, you'll need it in step 3) below.).

Explain the problem, and that you aren't going to pay for them to correct their mistake. If they insist, I'd do 3 things:
    1) Tell the Supervisor you want to "escalate" this to the next level - in effect appeal the Supervisors decision.

    2) If they say "no" or that there is no 'next level', tell them you are contacting your state's Attorney General Office of Consumer Assistance - look them up in the phone book to get their correct name - and you are contacting them to file a formal complaint against the "Support Center" (whatever their official name is).

    3) Contact the Attorney General's office and file a formal complaint.

What you are wanting is for the laptop to be repaired at no cost of any kind to you and to be done quickly. Yes, I know, this is not a quick process, but you are in effect, at their mercy. And I repeat, if you go ahead on your own, you run the very real risk that any future warranty repairs won't be covered; that's a potentially big risk.

In all of this I'm assuming you live in the USA, if you don't or can't find a Consumer Assistance listing in the phone book, post back here and I'll try to help.
