    hi all,

pls help me identify my problem.
my comp has been shutting down for no reason lately. it can do this anytime, (when it's starting up,running progs etc) however, i've just realised today that when i don't utilise my cd-rw drive (ie. i open the tray and leave it open until i shut e comp down), this auto shut down problem doesn't occur. i've tried closing the cd tray after windows has started up, and the comp just shuts down! but i was still able to use the cd drive today for one moment. i'm confused because the drive is working perfectly, it's a yamaha internal cd-rw(20x 10x 40x).

does the problem most likely lie with my drive or my comp's power supply?

What is the wattage of your PS? Do you have access to another cd-rw drive?

Isn't there a virus that causes this?

    Right.

Sounds like an issue with the CD drive to me (call me obvious). You say it shuts down. Does it initiate the shutdown procedure or does it just turn the system off?

You might be interested in this, provided you've turned on showing of error screens.

To do this, go to Right click my computer -> advanced -> startup and recovery (settings button) -> uncheck automatically restart

If you get a BSOD next time you close your CD drive, then theres your problem.

    The PSU sounds fine.

Had a problem like this and found a settin in the BIOS which turned my pc on and off from remote if needed. This meant that anytime someone phoned the house my modem shut my puter off or turned it on. A long shot but worth a try.
