HELP!! Computer freezes when I play video

Hey dudes,
Ok, first off, I just want to say how thankful I am to you guys for what you do. You guys helped me get rid of a virtumunde virus mad quick, so thanks!

Now, this problem involves my video. After my virus was completely removed, I noticed a problem that wasn't there before the infection; whenever I try to play video, whether it's in VLC, Quicktime, etc., the computer freezes, and must be cold restarted.

I reformatted my whole hard drive, reinstalled VLC and QT, and reinstalled the latest video driver for my nVidia 6500 GT, and the problem remains. I even tried to roll back my nVidia driver to an earlier driver: no dice. I'm out of ideas, you guys got any? :confused

Even though VLC doesn't really depend on codecs to play back video and music, installing a good codec pack might help. I personally like the KLite Mega Codec Pack. It's very complete and includes several helpful media-oriented tools (like GSpot, for example) and it also includes Media Player Classic (which I personally prefer over VLC but that's my opinion). You can choose to opt out of installing any of the added components. Also, have you installed the updated chipset drivers for the motherboard?

 

ok, I installed the K-lite codec pack and now I can play video on media player. Strangely, I can play videos on quicktime only in safe mode...The point is that it worked, so thanks! I think I'm all set, unless there's anything else you'd suggest just to see if we can get quicktime working. THanks!

 

Try uninstalling it, rebooting the PC, and install QuickTime Alternative. It offers full QuickTime support without being forced to use the QuickTime player. You can play QuickTime files using VLC or Media Player Classic or Windows Media Player....
