HELP - Computer SO SLOW

I am a new person on this site and I need some help. My computer seems to get slower and slower each day. It is slow with start up and opening programs and such. I have run AdAware SE, Spybot, and even RegistryBooster 2. I bought a external hard drive and put almost all my music files, videos, and photos on there so the space is not the problem.

Processor Speed 1.56 GHz
Memory (RAM) 512 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Operating System Version 5.1.2600

If all your important files are on the external disk drive and you have details of license keys and configuration settings (e-mail, etc.) then it may be simpler to re-format and re-install your PC back to the original configuration.

Have you looked at the MS Windows task manager to see what process is hogging your system?
