    Hi people!

Ok, bit of a long story to set the scene.

I started with a computer connected to a modem via a router (so ethernet from modem to router, ethernet from router to computer.) Other computers in the house were connected wirelessly to the network.

Then I decided to swap two of the computers in the house round. So the one that was connected via ethernet to the router is connected wirelessly, and vice versa.

I reformatted the computer I was going to connect to the router/modem first.

Don't ask me how, but the result I've ended up with now (which works) is the modem connected to the router, and the router broadcasting wirelessly to all computers - including this one that's sitting RIGHT NEXT to the router. It's been okay for a while, but it's bugged me, and I can't help but feel I'd get better download speeds and so on if I connected the computer via ethernet.

However, nothing I do seems to work. I've tried plugging the modem directly to the computer (cycling power on modem and restarting computer inbetween) which doesn't work. I've tried connecting the computer to the router via ethernet too (cycling power on both router and modem and restarting inbetween) but that doesn't work either.

So essentially I'm stuck with wireless speeds when I should have a direct connection.

Can any of you guys shed any light on this, and perhaps give me a solution?

    Thanks.

    -SoM.

PS: If it helps my ISP is blueyonder (though that's been taken over by Virgin Media now) and my router is a Netgear WGR614v4.

You said you re formatted the computer, when you did did you re install the Ethernet drivers?

    I always forget something basic...

No I don't think I did reinstall those. Do I have to redownload them from somewhere (if so, where?) or should they be on a CD?

    Thanks again!

SoM, just what buggabear said is probably your issue. Is this windows XP? If so right click on my computer and left click manage. Go to device manager and beside networking click the plus sign and make sure it lists a ethernet card of some kind. If it doesn't you'll need to go to the manufactuer's site of your computer or ethernet card from another computer and get the drivers. If it does list an ethernet card make sure your pulling a good ip address. To check this click on start then run and type cmd. Then click ok and you'll see a command prompt screen. Type ipconfig and hit enter. See if shows a ip address. Go from there and tell me where your at.

Ok guys, I've managed to fix the issue. I got out my motherboard utilities disc and installed the ethernet drivers again. The internet works perfectly now.

Thanks so much for the help though. I'm not particularly savvy with this sort of thing, and I probably wouldn't have found the issue without your help.

Good thing you kept your driver disks. Makes it much easier. Good luck.
