    Hey everyone,
I'm chasing some Help Desk software that's stand alone, no server and not web based.

Free is best but a trial would be ok too.

Is there such a thing or am I way off base ?

    Thanks.

hmmm. Not sure I quite understand. :( Is it for a "one-man-band"? Do you not want your endusers or other IT staff to have access?

    Just curious. :D

Yep, "one man band" explains it perfectly.
Customer contact by email ? phone ?

I have to download the software and then write user documentation for it so I'm
trying to keep it simple. :cool

I did find something called LBE Helpdesk, they actually give you a choice between web based or desktop versions.
I'm on a 45 day trial and it looks like it might do the trick.

Ah, I see. Well, we really like our Web Help Desk deployment quite a bit. It's web based BUT I reckon you could just running it 'localhost' and access it in your browser.

Pretty sure they still have a free edition for a 'one man band' scenario. Worth a look any who :)

If needing something simple, and you have Access, you could build one in a simple database. If you have a home server, and running Linux, there are various options out there. It really comes down to how extensive you want to get. For a one man show, I would opt for a option that you design in Access.

"Buy or Build?" Always a tricky one, ain't it? ;)

Tell me about it. Every circumstance is different. In my house, my help desk is my outlook email, or a note jotted down, since it is a couple of machines. I have looked at a couple web based servers, when I was toying with Linux, and the great thing was, you could get to it anywhere, but the bad thing was, it was not as robust as you would see with the better systems out there.

I look at it this way, if you are a one man shop, and have access, use it and design a simple help desk system. If you grow, then look into maybe purchasing a system designed with sql in mind.
