HELP! Driver-eating XP??

My problem first started a couple of weeks ago when my CD-RW started hanging on the last 10 seconds of saving a file. At first I though it was a problem with a faulty CD, so I tried another. No difference. Well, within a few days, BOTH my CD-RW and my standard CD -Drive were acting up and the system suddenly started saying there was a floopy drive on the machine, which there isn't (never has been). So, we figure the mother board is about to die and replace the whole thing with a bare bones system because it was cheaper and less risky than trying to fit new stuff in a crappy HP case. The 2 drives STILL don't work and the machine STILL insists there is a floopy drive present when there isn't. We go and get a new DVD/CD-RW combo drive on this all new machine. We install it. It comes up with the same error the other two drives were giving us: Code 39, drivers may be missing or corrupt. So now I don't know what to do with this thing. It's looking like some kind of Win XP issue now. What do I do with this beast?? I can't just repair the Windblows install since the CD drive isn't working on the system. I don't get a lot of chance to read forums, so PLEASE email me any help you may have for this issue.

I've already tried getting XP to look for drivers online to no avail. It just keeps telling me it can't find any.
