    Hi everyone,

Just found this excellent site and I hope you can give me some advice. I recently had a philips dvd+rw 416 series installed into my computer it also is a cdrw. I am using XP home edition and the software that came with the package was Nero 5.5.10.54b I have used the cdrw to create my own cd's which is fantastic and I got a bulk pack of blank cdr disks when I got the cdrw. I have not had a problem but all of a sudden this morning when I try to burn any disk I am getting a box appear saying

Medium required for the compilation cd-r/rw

    Medium type in recorder (empty)

I have obviously put a blank disk in the cdrw and it does not readit is there I have also tried burning using Windows Media player and all of a sudden it is telling me that I have to input a blank disk.

    I hope you can help.

    Dave

First make sure that you are entering cd/rw and not dvd/rw. Although you have a dvd/rw you can't enter dvd/rw into the drive and burn music cd's onto them. Check that first and then post another message.

    Hi Jddtheman,

What seems to be happening is I start nero and the first screen is basically do you want to create a cd or dvd, so I click on cd then follows copy a full cd or create a new cd. I have tried both but it then goes to either the drag and drop screen or the straight copy screen the cd is read from my existing cd player and then I am told to enter a blank cd into the new drive. This is when the problem occurs because it does not recognise that a disk is in the recorder. When I have tried using windows media player etc. the same basic thing happens it is when it comes to preparing the blank disk it is not reading one there.

Ok well you have made sure you are entering a cd/rw and not a dvd/rw right? If you are sure then it maybe the cd/rw drive that is the problem. There have been problems with some of the phillips cd/dvd/rw so it could be the drive itself. If you have a game or something enter the game disc into the cd/dvd/rw drive and see if it loads.(because a game can also load in the cd/dvd/rw drive) If it dosn't then it is almost ceartain that it is the drive that is faulty. Try it and post a new message. Hope this helps.

    Hi jddtheman,

Just done as you have suggested and I loaded a game into the e drive and nothing so I tried a dvd into it and it worked fine. Gets stranger by the minute.

Wow it does get stranger by the minute. The only other thing i can think of is the cd burner laser is broken. But that might not be If I were you I would ask chasling or Major there the only ones who can help you now, I am good with computers but this has totally stumped me sorry.

Hmm. Do you know what IDE channel the drives are on? And also what positions they are at (i.e. is the CD-RW drive on master? is it on the same cable as the hard drive?)

Also have you updated any ASAPI drivers recently? If not, it might be time to.

You might need to upgrade your firmware for the DVD drive... check this link out see if anything there applies : http://www.consumer.philips.com/glo...ERNAL_DRIVES_SU&sourceType=2&_requestid=88057

    Hi all,

Just a quick update I am in contact with Philips over the problem, after putting me off a while they said that the media I am using could be to blame so I went and bought some new ones that they recommended still didn't work.
They told me uninstall Nero and reinstall it and see if that did anything.
Thay finally told me to try installing the latest version of firmware and proceeded to give me a link that didn't work.I had already downloaded this however thanks to Goldfish.
So I am still without my RW I don't really understand the IDE channels and ASAPI drivers so if someone could explain to me were they are found I will have a look.

    Thanks everyone

    Dave
