I was given a TV last week and went and picked it up today well its not what i thought it was but it will do if i can make it work right but i can't seem to find info on it.

The person i got it from said it was a Philips 30" Wide screen flat panel well it was a 30inch wide screen flat screen but no flat panel lol weights a ton. but it will do for what i need it for and well i can't find no info about it. I know what the problem is but again can't find info about it.

This is the info from the back of the TV

    Philips
    Model No: 30PW633R37A
    Serial NO: YA1A0337004612
    Man date: September 2003

Heres what it is doing so you can give me some idea's maybe i am off on what i think is wrong with it. When you turn it on you hear the tube click on and when you see the picture the edges is all wavey and the color is not right and makes a high pitched sound and then afew afew seconds you hear the tube click back off and after another second you hear it click back on and it does that repeataly (Tho the front panel light stays on) Oh and if you flip it through the channels before it clicks back off it will not click off it will flip through the channels and when you stop then it will click off and on.

Manual, huh? How about here http://tv.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/magnavox/magnavox_lcd_hdtv_product_list.html I saw yours listed about half way down the page. The only drawback is that you have to register with them. So, let's see if this gets ya what ya need!!;) As for that fig-a-ma-jig you posted a picture of, it does look a little brown and, hopefully, that's the problem. If this set is a CRT, remember that CRTs can hold an electrical charge for a looooong time after it's been unplugged, so be careful!! I mean, don't be standing in a puddle of water while you're messing around on the inside of that thing!! I'd sure hate to change your forum name to something like 'Burnt Toast,' or some such!!!

Don't want to intrude but - PLEASE be real careful in that area of Mr. TV.
The High pitch sound is most likely to be the Flyback X-former getting ready for last rights and testements. Also check the Verticle output. Probably an upright IC on a heat sink will look like the Horizontal output IC
That coil on the CRT that is about 10 -20KV as Stubby stated it does hold a charge.
Look at the bright side. It is not an old tube TV where you did not know if the chassis was "HOT" or Ground until you found out - sometimes the hard way.
I might suggest www.repairclinic.com another I did considerable business with Sams Photo facts. I checked all of my TV schems and don't have anything that new.
One of my hobbies is refurb old tube amplifiers Gibson, Fender etc.... just aquired a 1947 Firestone radio. Safe and successful repair of TV. Madhouse57

I think this hand is going to get out of thread or something to that effect. pay attention as there will be questions before you are allowed out.
Please note - I sometimes, while thinking, put in margial thinking stuff, mostly humorus

The unit you are showing w/ the 8 track Phonograph AM FM is a common (not any more) fixture from the early 60s to end of the 70s turned into the Dinosaur by the Component craze after that it is now all low end junk. Bang and Olafsson and a few others still make the top grade stuff BUT it is exspensive and worth it.

This unit should have some good stereo sound probably a 12 speaker w/ tweeter (horn or speaker) has an L C (L= coil C = Cap) passive crossover. BASIC and EFFECTIVE.
First thing about tape decks, phonos is where the rubber meets the road. Drive belt, pinch rollers, idler wheels. Rule 1 these break down through time and can be replaced or revitalized. Things you will need fine emrey cloth, rubbing alcohol, Q-tips, if you want - try Rubber Renu on drive wheels, pinch rollers first if not the cure REPLACE most of this is held in place with "E" clips. "E" clips made the Wright bros understand flight. "E" clips is also the reason we have metal detectors

BELTS don't screw with them REPLACE. LOOK to see if there is any rubber residue buildup (once again TIME is the factor) on pulleys spindles etc... Qtips w/ alcohol if this does not work fine emrey cloth, AND I MEAN FINE
(Time is 8:20pm with -11 degrees! They will be chopping the dogs off the fire hydrants tomorrow morning)
replacement knobs can be found in most of the catalogs.

Please note SPEAKERS, these after time and gravity, (gravity being discovered by Newton and he wrote some laws pertaining to this! BUT! The famous painter Marc Chagal 1887 to 1985 did not obey these laws in some of his paintings i.e. people and animals floating around in the pictures Newton rolled in his grave) speakers feel the effect of gravity and in some cases cause rubbing of the voice coil and giving bad fidelity something to remember if bad sound response.

Where are the fastest dogs in the World?
Greenland! Why? you might be asking....
because the trees are so far apart.

Phono Needles/cartriges tape deck parts can be found in the following links. Some of these links have nothing to do with this situation but are useful or might be in the future.

    Any questions, please ask Madhouse57

P.S. Pointing a screwdriver at the non functioning electrical object while reciting Ohms law WILL NOT intimidate said electrical object to work.

LASTLY Be very careful with the voltages. thank you

Muahahaha Madhouse, you're more tangential than I am!:-D Agreed on the flyback as a diagnosis, sometimes you can see the BSOD(Blue Smoke of Death). Gawd that's horrible smoke. On that console you have, I had an older friend who had a nice piece of furniture like that and instead off refurbishing the old stuff in it, he put new components in along with the speakers and had a great looking system just for the price of the components.

You just need some woodworking skills to install a new component deck, he skipped the turntable as he couldn't really find a replacement. As to the pulleys and belts, well the belts get stretched and dried, pulleys lose their grip etc. Pulling apart a mechanism like a tape drive is just insane unless you're really meticulous and even then...:eek

If it was me, that's what I would do as that's a nice piece of furniture. You can rebuild it, better, faster, louder!!!:p:-D

PLEASE NOTE: I do make errors in spellings etc might not see them until about the 4th or 5th time I read something.

Best chance is the rubber. most are easy to get to, the older stuff is quite simple and few rubber parts.

I can agree on the "mods" does make life easier.

As far as the sound goes. Let me go into the world of playing bars / clubs etc... I did it for years. The Fender Twin Reverb pre CBS ownership and after to the ending of this workhorse bar amp replaced by the Evil Twin and other mediocre variations of.
The musicians were getting upset so people like B.B. King dumped the Twins being offered and went to other amps, King went with a dual 12" spkr Lab L-4 amp. Picture this....L-4 is a solid state amp it provided the sound they wanted. What was the sound? the smooth roll-off which was that of the Twin, Super Reverb, Super Six, Quad, BandMaster and the Dual Showman (side note here If you were to hire Chuck Berry or Dale Dick to play you must supply 2 Dual Showmans and back up band. If you don't 'SUCKS to be you') After losing ground to everyone with the departure of these amps Fender came up with the "reissue" the amps were the same they even had Jensen Speaker manufacture to old specs on the spkrs. The big problem? They did not sound the same. The mis-diagnosis "It has a printed ckt board, its' not hand wired" So there you have upset people and they start selling a low $ing just to get rid of them. I ended up with a friend that told me this and I laughed, took the amp and returned about 3 weeks later had him play through it. MY GOD! Its' a miralce! He thought I hand wired it. I finally told him months later what I did. The PC bd has nothing to do with it - it what was ON the board that makes the difference. Metal Film Resistors with 1 to 5% tolerance all my "miracle" was I changed them to Carbon resistors with the original 10% tol. the smooth rolloff returned.
You listen to Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and others from the 50 / 60s it is the SOUND. You are in that time. Microphones they sang through, amps.
I played in a band that covered it all. We used mics from the 50s and you had the sound of the 50s, we changed to newer mics for the 60 / 70 sets (Disco was not played) We did a High school dance in 79 and were playing the sets we even did Polkas they had us back several times up to playing the 81, 82, & 83 Prom nights.

You want loud? Go with a Marshall.
    Obnoxously Raw Loud? Hi Watt.
Want your ears ripped off? Try finding a Baldwin Exterminator This amp came with a plate on it that stated Baldwin and subsidaries were not responsible for hearing loss due to the use of this amp!
I've been around a while seen a lot of things. I do know sound. newest guitar I have was made in 96, Other Axes from May 67, June 68 and April 71

Hopefully I did not bore any one with this "Disertation" for lack of a better description. I was fun going back in Time. Thank you! AuggieDoggie

N5638J really needs to make the choice

Lab Amps were designed and produced by the Mr Moog as in Synthsizers.

How do you place a value on something?
In working Order and you find someone that collects said articles from that time....
Probably sold for about $200 +/- new good chance made in the USA. right person, conditions moon in the seventh house etc... $300 - $400 maybe more? Clean it beyond clean I am talking "detail heaven" My favorite - Liquid Gold furniture polish adds lots of luster DO NOT USE car wax, Armor All etc.. this will fork up the finish, clean all metal no fingerprints. Presentation is the best first impression. find some one that details cars they can tell you how to get into the corners etc...
Go for it! Modivation is like breathing - You have to do it constantly.

If you folks are still reeling from my intensity on certain things - my apologies.
I have been chasing the Capehart 4006DT and they al lead to MG forum. with the few lines dealing with cheap cutlery. Nothing on Ebay - very seldom go there anymore.
Hope things work out with said unit. Hard to chase the "good ol' days on the net"

We have a collector of "oddities" in town, think I will give him a visit.. One of a millions things he has is a full bar from a place from the early 1900s. Brass and Oak - nothing like it.
