Help for Avast!!

Hi,

Have Windows 98 operating system and was using AntiVir9x as my virus protection software. Decided to shift to Avast! Didn't have a problem downloading and setting it up but once it was in place, I cannot browse at all.

Checked with my ISP provider and was told I needed to disable the firewall. Did that but still not able to browse. I have a dial up connection and I get connected to the net but no site opens.

I also, with the help of ISP support pinged my server - that worked but I couldn't ping any web site!!! Please help!!!

Firstly did you deinstall the other AV program - 2 AV's together may not work very well.
Second - with W98 and IE5 or 6 I would NEVER disable my firewall and I think in that respect your ISP has given you bad advice.
I had Avast working with w98 berore I went to Xp and had no probs at all.
I would be looking at a problem with your browser assuming it is IE 5 or 6.
I use either Opera (which you pay for) or Firefox(free) both are good and seem to be less prone to the crap that IE5 or 6 gets up to. Suggest you try one of those and see if you can then browse. Apart from that I bow to others here who may have an instant solution for you

Yes, I did uninstall the other AV program before I installed this one coz a friend of mine went thru a few problems coz she didn't uninstall the AV program. Tried browsing on Netscape but nothing happened - got the same error message.

I really don't know what I did wrong. Not sure if I should re install my operating system - would that help??!!!
