this is going to sound extremly stupid and blonde but i had a document svaed on a memory stick and the old version on the computer... for word and i replaced the one on the memory stick with the one on the computer... and i was meant to do it the other way around so i am now left with two copies of the old version rather than the up to date one.. is there any hope in hell of me being able to get the other one back or do i have to do it all again :cry

If you had accidently deleted a file, that would be one thing, and help could come.

The fact you overwrote the file, if I read your posting right, pretty much makes you out of luck.:wave

Hi

What Windows version do you have? if Vista or Windows 7 then you have an option called Previous Versions, to action this right click the folder (dont think it works for USB) on your HDD with the saved Doc in and click Properties > click the Previous Versions tab and you should see (if System Restore has not been disabled) a list of dates, just double click the date that you knew the file was the one you want to open the folder (or click Open) and right click copy the file, dont click recover as the whole folder will be recovered and you can overwrite new with old files, just right click > copy and then paste into a new folder the one you want.

Will work with XP but only if you have XP SP2 or above, but its not a good as the VSS service in Vista/Win7.

Could also unhide hidden files then look in the folder you saved your Word docs and this one specifically into, for a temp back of that file, say your files called hello.doc, then the file to look for should be ~$ello.doc (to unhide files, in any folder click Tools > Folder Options > View Tab and look down the list and click Show Hidden Files and Folders > Apply

Dont think undelete applications will work sadly as you have as mentioned above overwritten the actual file.

You can also try Shadow Explorer - ShadowExplorer.com - Downloads which is an alternative program for "Previous Versions," for those editions of Vista and Windows 7 that do not offer Previous Versions or Shadow Copies.

open document on the file menu choose version if you have the auto save feature on or manually saved as you worked the document changes there will be a list of any previous versions of the document.

thank you everyone... spoke to some people round here too and they said im pretty much ****ed for gettin it back so ive given up, just have to write the bloody thing over agian
