Hi guys, i'm really at the end of my rope right now ... I've struggled the past month to get enough money to build a decent gaming PC (student), i was happy and all, used pcpartpicker.com & some reddit help to check the compatiblity of the build that i was trying to make, but right now it's been problem after another, while i could solve the past ones, recently my computer started randomly freezing under some weird conditions that i've only noticed ( i can't freeze it at will, but it's always the same thing when it does ) :

It only freezes when i'm barely using it, Browser + Dofus 2.0 (an Adobe Air based game, not very demanding at all)

    Note that :

    - It doesn't freeze when i play triple A games for hours
    - It doesn't freeze when i'm only using the browser (whether it's Firefox or Chrome, i've experienced freezes using the 2 of them)
    - It doesn't freeze when the computer is idle for 8+ hours

    My Pc specs :

    Windows 10 Enterprise 64 bits

Ryzen 5 1500x, i'm using the wraith spire that comes with it

    8GB Ram DDR4 Corsair LPX Vengeance 3200mhz, i've capped it at 2933

EVGA SSC 2.0 (double fan) GTX 1060 6GB

    Seagate Barracuda HDD 1TB

    Seasonic M12II non-modular 520W PSU

PS 1 : Absolutely NOTHING is 100% used when it freezes nor is overheating, and one time it froze with youtube playing, the image freezed but the sound continued playing.

PS 2 : When i say freeze, it freezes indefinitly, until i reset / force shutdown using the buttons on the case.

    Things i've tried :

    - Uninstalling drivers & reinstalling the latest versions
    - Disabling hardware acceleration
    - Uninstalling Adobe flash player
    - Checking that everything is plugged right in the motherboard / PSU
    - Updated Mobo's Bios
    - Formating Windows 8.1 and then switching to Windows 10
    - Updating Windows

    Things i can't do :

    - Replacing anything (PSU, MOBO, RAM, etc...) i don't have money right now and nothing's cheap / easy to buy where i'm from, so please tell me it's a software issue (not telling you to lie, just hoping for the best ...)

It'd be very appreciated if you help me, thank's in advance.

It does or it doesn't? I've experienced freezes using both browsers.

It doesn't freeze when i use the browser without the game (Dofus) on, or atleast never did, it's when they're both running so either Chrome + Dofus or Firefox + Dofus, i've never experienced freezes when i wasn't playing Dofus, but i always play it while doing someting on Google Chrome / Firefox so i'm not sure whether the problem comes from it, from the browsers or from something else ... I'm lost and desperate rn ...

Interesting....have you tried a different browser?

  5. Ganshu

    Ganshu Private E-2

Yes but i can't reproduce the freeze at will, so i'm not sure if it's conclusive ...

If using a different browser....only time will tell.

    Ganshu Private E-2

Well it's already happened with 2 of them, chrome and firefox

There is no need knowing your motherboard...if the issue only happens with a browser open and a particular game running...it is either the game or the browser.

I've tried re-unstalling the game and uninstalling adobe air, i'll see if it somehow doesn't happen again

Update : My PSU is an S12II not an M12II sorry my bad. And the Game alone can cause the freeze, no need to have a browser open, i've added a video showcasing the freeze/hang here :

    And here's my pcpartpicker list : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qtgxYT

Since your motherboard can support the integrated video, I would first remove the video card and see if you can get it to freeze without the video card. If you can, then it's not the video drivers, but something else.

If it doesn't freeze, it's related to the video drivers and the browser. I saw something like this on another forum and there was an option in the browser for disabling/enabling graphics acceleration or something like that, that fixed his problem.

You can also try a portable version of the browser to see if the problem happens there to help eliminate browser issues.

You can also downgrade drivers--latest drivers aren't always the best as they usually introduce other bugs.

SamirD ...we have already determined it is not the browser, but the game.

Ah yes, I must have missed that.

    Big Update :

The Hang / Freeze happened even when the computer was idle (w/o the game running).
    here's a video showing it :

I've also let the computer run while i was out, using apps that aren't very demanding (that i almost always use) and i've taken a picture of my Hwmonitor, task manager and resources monitor, showing the % usage of everything, and the temperature while it froze / hung, if that could help finding the source of my problem,
    Picture link : https://i.imgur.com/eHZHdIO.jpg

    I've tried :
    - Checked the HDD for bad sectors, it's in good shape (crystaldiskinfo)
    - Unplugging everything from the motherboard
    - Carefully Replacing the thermal paste
    - Downgrading Bios
    - Uninstalling suspect apps (EVGA Precision for exemple)
    - Formating windows (again)
    - Uninstalling flash and adobe air (again)

Please if you can help that'd be much apreciated.

Freezing with or without the game, when the PC is idle, might be a power / sleep setting.

If you haven't already tried removing the video card and going with the integrated video, I'd try it. It's time to start stripping the system down one piece at a time to narrow down what's going on.

Just curious....you did use thermal paste, yes?

  22. Ganshu

    Ganshu Private E-2

Yes, i've replaced it 2 times just to make sure that it's not the culprit

Have you tried booting into safe mode to see if it still freezes?

  24. SamirD

    SamirD Private E-2

Okay, so if you're not going to try to remove the video card and run the integrated, just pop in a linux live cd and see if that crashes at all. If not, then it's a software issue for sure and I would be pretty certain it's related to the video card.

OH sorry SamirD just read your message, i'll try linux
I haven't tried safe mode, i'll try it too

You are only 100 watts over the minimum recommended power supply rating for your video card. That may not be a large enough margin for certain things you are doing.

However, it bears mentioning that since the latest W10 update, even my system will randomly freeze every now and then. When it first did the update it would just randomly shut down out of the clear blue sky. It even did repeated POST reboots during and post install for whatever reason. The issue persisted until I found W10 had updates to install for my Logitech keyboard and TrakBall mouse (ridiculous, eh?). The more complex things get, the more of a pain in the ol' patootie it can get to be.

    Tried safe mode, it froze
Also it froze on windows 8.1 too on idle, so i don't think it's the PSU capacity, the PSU itself may be malfunctioning

I'll send back the PSU & Motherboard to Amazon, hoping that they'd fix something.

Was just watching some YouTube video, and the system froze and went into diagnostics. I built this current configuration from the ground up, and it has had ZERO issues until the latest windows OS update.

Don't be too hasty to condemn your hardware.
