Help from peopl who play Counter-Strike

well.. does anyone know exactly how you get choke/loss?
b/c for some reason.. my built computer, which is 10 times better then my friends gets CHOKE! he gets 0 choke and loss and i get all kinds for some reason now.. and we both have the same internet provider and everything.. what could be causing me this problem? the ONLY thing i think is that when i put my heatsink on my cpu.. i didnt "lock" the headsink on.. like on the amd 64's i didnt turn the lever to "lock" it in place.. BUT im sure that cant be why i have choke though.. i could not get the thing to turn and if i turned anymore i thought the lever on teh heatsink was going to snap off.. so can anyone help?

 

Dude, not locking your heatsink on can result in that heat sink falling off, the locks there for a reason, and if that falls off your gonna have a dead mobo, dead components, and a ton of smoke with the smell of burnt plastic that wont easily go away; wth are you thinking? Now I know that your saying "well if I force it too much imma break it". Let me tell you installing this arctic 64 cooler, I had to put the pressure of a life time, I knew that the amount of pressure I was placing only was usefull in probably hurting someone; but it had to be done, as soon as its locked its as if no pressure was ever there. Your sacrificing alot of good HW because of your lack of locking something in...

 

alright fine.. ill do that when i get home.. im in school right now.. but yeah ill do that when i get home today.. ill TRY to lock the thing in place, i seriously think its going to break if put that much pressure on the lever... and im sure thats not going to stop my lag problem.. anyone esle?

 

What are your rates set at?

In console type 'rate'; enter and see what it's set at. do the same for cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate as well. Depending on your connection type set 'rate' at 25000, cl_updaterate at 101, and cl_cmdrate at roughly your average frames per second you get. Now these probably won't make it perfect but from here you can adjust accordingly to whether you're getting loss or choke with net_graph 3. I normally just adjust my rate up and down till all is good. Check out the Steam forums for more in-depth help... a lot of threads on there about issues like this. Hope this helps out a little bit.

 

Oh also, going back to the original problem (i got side tracked), your cabling around your house/apt can also be to blame(if its cut up, brittle, or old), including traffic congestion and # of node hops it takes to connect to the server itself.

im sure there fine and stuff.. and ohh.. i see i see.. at one point i thought that was the problem why i was lagging and stuff <--- b/c of my wires in the back.. ill check them when i get home.. i got like 5 more mins and i get the leave so ill check all these stuff soon

 

Im talking bout the wires throughout your house, leading to the pole, and underground.

 

ohhh them... i have no idea.. im sure that cant be the problem.. but who knows .. im about to seriously just sell my computer and build another one and hopefully that one works out good..

 

How do you figure thats not the problem? Calling the ISP wont help since it costs em a boat load to do that type of work, most wiring throughout towns are over 50 years old.

k well i got my cpu locked.. and it took FOREVER.. and i can "unlock" it easy.. its so dumb b/c i dont think its locked.. the lever is turned all the way by it looks croked and i dunno it just seems like its not locked.. but whatever.. i turned the lever and its over all the way so i "locked" it .. i still get lag.. its so stupid.. i really wish i knew why i still spike up to 100 ping or sometimes just stay in 200 ping range.. i hate this.. i think its my computer.. i must of f'ed something up when i put it together..

 

Well, this is just a starting point. Trying lower your rate to say 15000 and updaterate and cmdrate in half. You're gonna have to tweak them until it becomes stable. Just putting them at this and leaving it there while you're still getting choke/loss/lag isn't gonna help anything. Also, is this for any server you go to or what? I honestly think it's a rate issue and not your computer (aside from your heatsink issue) but that's just my opinion..... hope you figure it out

rage its on all my games that i play.. i get lag spikes and stuff.. for no reason.. this is !very! frustrating and yes its on all the servers.. very strange.. like has anyone played TFC (Team Fortress Classic)?.. well i get more lag on that then CS 1.6 ... somehow.. its sad.. this NEVER happened on my old computer.. i never had these problems.. and now all of a sudden i am

 

Man, I used to play TFC all the time. Never played any other game besides that for the longest time. Then I started up with CS and unfortuntely TFC never got played again. But anyways,there's always spyware issues too. Run a virus and spyware scan lately?? Got any background programs running that are using up bandwidth like d/l music, movies, messengers, whatever? Try scan disk/defragging your hard drive. Just a few more ideas to try.

What's your connection anyway? cable? dsl? Could try doing a couple of tracert in a command prompt to some of the servers ip you go to and try and see if where the bottleneck is.

yes iv ran stinger, ad-aware, spy-bot, ccleaner, and defragged my computer.. i dont use any other programs when i run CS.. and anyways if i did.. it shouldnt make it laggy anyways since its a nice computer... and my connection is cable.. same as all my friends.. and they have way worse computers then what i have.. and they somehow have better ping then me.. with no choke/loss.. its terrible..

 

Well umm since you only get lag playing online, Hence you're connection is most likely the culprit, And yes the cable lines going to and from the modem can cause lag problems I have had the same problems.

But it is best to call you're ISP and have an emergency trobule call sent out so they can scan for any leaks in those lines and replace it, Or it could be you're cable modem.

 

true... well how would i get a new cable modem? are they free? and also its the modem iv ALWAYS had.. ever since i used charter communications.. iv never changed it.. charter communications left and atlantic broadban is now here and i still have the same box.. so its like 3 or 4 years old

 

also.. i just played cs..heres the story.. i got on at like 9.. no school today due to snow.. but nm that.. i got on cs at 9.. i was like WOW no lag and i had 15 ping but with 100 choke.. someone on the server told me to match my cl_updaterate with my ping.. it WAS 101 but i changed it to 20 and i got 0 choke.. i was like YES!!! then just now.. at like 11:30 out of NOWHERE i get this like choppyness on the game.. im like oh no big deal.. then i look at my ping and its 50.. im like huh? then i keep looking at it and it boosts to like 150... im like FFS.. what the hell is going on... this is so messed up..

 

4 years?!? Yeah then it's time for a modem change, If it's a modem leased by you're ISP than they should swap it, No charge, I wouldn't worry about that if they got bought out by a new company they should still provide the same service.

But to do that you need to call them and have them send out someone to diagnose the issue, Usualy what I do is if they don't find anything wrong I get to the fact that it's the modem so I ask the person to swap it and my problems are gone.

ohh.. well ill try to give them a call today to try to get another modem.. that'll be nice if it works.. i always wondered if someone on a laptop or whatever would be stealing my internet? from my router.. but i just unplugged it and used just the box and i still have lag.. i just tryed my laptop on it and my old computer.. still lag.. so yeah its deffinitely something with my internet.. and yeah i live in cumberland, maryland.. atlantic broadban is real nice but right now.. i feel like burning the place down

 

well i just went to my friends house and hes lagging also.. sighs..
