I put a drive from one of my computers into my new one hoping to transfer my data to the new one (hooked up as slave) I can read shared data and data of other users, see the windows folders, program foldders and such, but not mydocument folder. I need the data bad.

Is there some way to get at this data? The drive will not boot on the original computer. I tryed making a boot disk and all that so I really want to try to get the slave to pass data to the new computer.

Any help would be appreciated.. :)
    Thanks,
    Bob.

download a copy of knoppix 3.6 if all fails it will boot (live) and you can then burn the files to a cdr from hard drive. its a linux os system that runs from ram. no install needed. i have used it loads in emergencies to retrieve peoples data.
http://knoppix.org/ just burn a image with nero etc
    good luck

    So you have Windows XP...Home?

You have a slave drive from a former system that you want data off, but there are certain folders you cannot access?

What happens when you try to access them?

thanks, After trying to figure out what to do on that web site I just ordered a CD for a few bucks. That web site is about the worst for instructions. Thank you very much for your help. I can't wait to see my files!

Yes Home Edition when it is slave to the good system I can't see my "myfolder" folder but can see other users stuff and shaired folder.

When I put the drive in the original system the rom bios doesn't see the drive for some reason. It is set to auto ID. I took the cable out of the good one and it isn't the problem the old one works in the new system.

when linux boots look for the burning software (all included) and burn your files to cdr. you can also use it with a dial up modem to get online in emergencies also. when i first used i loved it and am now a convert to linux. in fact you probally would not have the problems you have now, had you been running linux.Dont write to the ntfs xp partition though. (loads of tempting toys on disk)
just drag your files with burning software (like nero) and burn to disc.
if you forgot your admin password you can use knoppix to bypass windows security to read and copy files on pc also. powerful tool in the wrong hands..

    :)

If you use Linux, I recommend Mepis. I tried Knoppix first on a friend's but I couldn't copy anything without admin rights. When I tried Mepis, logged on as admin, it worked just fine.

Do you know why I can't see my "My Documents" folder when I have it attached as a slave to the other XP system? I can see program files and operating system on the drive..

The only way I can see the drive is if it is set up as a slave on the working XP system. Will I be able to see the slave drive when I use this boot?

do you mean when you use knoppix? will you be able to see slave drive.
if so then answer is yes m8, you will see all hdd on system.. DO NOT move file from slave(broke) to master(working xp) using knoppix though.. burnn to disk and boot working xp then drag and drop.. to save. The reason is that although knoppix can read ntfs(xp) file systems . its a bit dodgy when writting to a ntfs partition. much safer to burn disk and then copy to new working xp. :)

Thanks, But when I boot with my Knoppix 3.6 the cd burner trys to use the DVD drive that the OS is in to write to and will not recognize cd in CD writer. I try to change the properties of the drive and the OS asks me for the boot password. Don't know it.

sorry been away for a week, will try knoppix drive change on my system. what is your cdrw drive brand and model number? other option is to use some removable drive ie usb pen or externel hard drive and drag and drop.. would use empty media though.. :)

did it say "ROOT PASSWORD" or "BOOT PASSWORD" suspect it was root if so dont type anything just enter, when in live mode there is no root password. you can apply a password on a hdd install.

i remember using some software called drivecopy when i got my new hard drive. it just created 2 discs for me, you boot from them and everything was transferred from the old one to the new one, however i can't remember where i got it from...

probally something similar to nortons ghost. great for upgrades to larger hdd, and backup, but it copies broken os to so you end up with a new drive that wont boot. it just copies everything,
