I originally posted in the hardware section because I thought that it was possibly a hard drive failure. I failed to understand that the hardware section is more for connecting and power up the devices and someone made the suggestion that I move the thread here. I thought I would start a new one to see if the software portion might help.

I have an IBM-DJSA-210 (10GB) hard drive. I have used cccleaner to fix registry problems and did so recently before I began experiencing problems. I also recently deleted some programs to free up space (I didn't have enough to run defrag) and then ran defrag. After I completed these items, my computer would not come out of hibernation (windows XP Pro). I would have to restart around the hibernation and then it would come up and work ok. Then I could get it to come up ok, but at the end, the programs were having errors and not able to be loaded. I now cannot get windows to start. When I pick any of the options: the safe modes, last known good configuration, and start windows normally, I get a blue screen and start right back where I began. I do get the windows screen before it blue screens.

I do not seem to have the option to repair windows when I boot from my XP pro disk. All it will let me do is format the drive and reload windows. The only way I can get into a c:/ prompt is to use the recovery console. I ran a hard drive diagnostic program and it said that the hard drive may fail soon. When the computer began acting funny, I moved most of my important information off.

I know that this laptop will probably not last for a lot longer, but it would be great if I could get it back up and running at least for the time being.

I am somewhat computer literate, but would appreciate step by step instructions.

Thanks in advance for all the help and my apologies if I shouldn't have created a new thread. I don't know how to move the old one.

    Hi Keyser,

Why not just buy a refurbished Toshiba 30GB HD at www.geeks.com for about $40.

The Hard Drive failing soon message tells you. The Hard Drive is dying.
If you still want files off the old disk- this, sometimes works,
If you have another computer, or, a very good friend with one, running XP, and if yours is a laptop, you will need a little adaptor- you can remove your hard drive, and connect it to a spare IDE connection on that computer, go to start, then right click on my computer, left click manage, then left click disk management, then click explore,f it recognises the disk. It is often possible to copy files/folders from there to the computer you are connected to
Otherwise, if the laptop is worth keeping, like Puppywonder says - get a new hard drive..

I will do that. I just didn't want to have to go to the trouble of setting everything back up if I didn't have to. I got things just how I like them.

Is there anyway to find out if the hard drive is connected with a connector or proprietary connection that I can't replace? Also does anyone know of a way to view a schematic on how to take the computer apart? Thanks so much for your help.

    Hi Keyser,

It's me again, first, you could tell us what brand and what model of laptop you have before we can help you. Your posts haven't included any information except the HD.
