I researched which printer all in one I wanted and made sure it was compatible. I just rec'd it today, thinking I got a good deal. However it just went on sale locally for much less!

Anyway, it keeps telling me my windows 98se isn't compatible with the hp f4180 all in one. The cd it includes doesn't have drivers included and I've checked on the drivers' sites to no avail.

Has anyone any ideas? If I have to pay postage to send it back I'll be so :cry

    What do I do???

I did some poking around, and there is a CHANCE that drivers for the OfficeJet 4100 series will work. These drivers have worked for some people, and not worked for others. Why is it hit or miss? Who knows. Drivers for the 4100 are also NOT available from HP for Win98/ME, but you may be able to find them at DriverGuide or elsewhere.... good luck!

EDIT: I found this link after looking around for some time (I had nothing better to do ;) ). I cannot vouch for the validity or integrity of this file so download and install it at your own risk. Be sure all your security software is up-to-date and active (as you should be doing anyhow).

[Okay, I heard back from the guy on ebay that I bought the printer from=no returns. So I'm stuck with it.

I need your opinions as I know enough to be trouble and not enough to get me into trouble!

My pc is 10yrs old, win 98se. Yes it's slow, but I just use it for email, making birthday cards etc...

Option1- Try relisting it on ebay and take a loss. It's on sale now at Stapes
for about the same I might get for it, new in the box.

Option2- I was at this little pc shop on the weekend. He can sell me a
tower for $85. with Windows 2000 installed.

Option3- Same pc shop can sell me a hard drive for $199. with Vista installed.
If I do chose this option, will all the software I have on my pc now
still be accessable? Or will I have to reload everything like Option2?

I'd love to buy a new system, but it's just not financially feasable right now with Xmas so close. How much time would each option give me before I'd need to replace it too?

    Thanks so much everyone! Lori

    Hi

Hard choices apart from one of them, DO NOT get Option 3. HD with Vista installed on it with the age of your PC, you will end up with more troubles than you have with just a printer as your hardware and most of the software is likely not to be Vista compatible. Is it just a HardDrive with Vista installed or a tower?

Was going to suggest Option 1. but got thinking you still need a printer? and dont know how hard or easy it is to find a win98 compatible one these days.

Unless you still have a good printer to do those things you use for PC for Option 1 is a cut your losses excercise, if you dont mind me asking what you pay for the printer? maybe more cost effective to sell back on ebay and see if that little PC shop has a win98 compatible printer thats of good quality print for you, then save up for a new PC and Printer.

Option 2. Well is similar to Vista, maybe better for compatability with your software than Vista, best best to check makers of your favorite software if their product works with W2K ok.... also make 100% sure that the PC shop is giving you a full Windows 2000 licence with COA ( Certificate of Authority ) and also, have a test of the PC in the shop first, to see if its not slower than the PC you have now?

Time to replace.... well that depends on what you want to use your PC for, Options 1 & 2 if the printer worked/works, then you could easily see the PC working for you until it suffers major hardware failure.

Option 3. I would not just add a Vista installed HD to an old PC, asking for too much trouble, but I would save up and get a new PC with Vista pre installed if funds run to it sometime mid next year, the prices will have and if you hit a sale period, you can get some great deals from the likes of HP/DELL etc on basic PCs, also Vista will be a bit more stable by then as it will have had its 1st Service Pack release well and truely over.

Thank you so much for such an informative reply, I never even thought of my software!
I do have an Epson printer and a separate scanner, so I didn't really need a new one. However it was cheaper to get a new printer than buy the ink! I paid $48. for the printer and with shipping it came to $70. It's now on sale at Staples for $69.

I think I will try to resell, and wait till next year to buy a new pc.

    Great advice, thanks!! Lori

Lori, I know exactly what you mean on the price of ink, its more expensive than petrol! and yes easier to buy a new printer, but also look out for some own brand inks from the likes of Staples as at times its much cheaper and just as good as the Original Makers inks, dont know the US suppliers too well to know of any good ones, maybe someone else reading this may know of a cheaper ink supplier, at times some online retailers sell the Original Makers inks cheap.

Yes if possible save up and not being in any hurry your likely to just see a good deal on a new PC and a printer which all are compatible, at times DELL have some great offers on standard PCs which will do the likes of what you use your PC for, as you dont need all the bells and whistles of a top of the range PC costing $Ks of dollars... likely and just guessing off top of head you can get a good PC for around 400-600, depending on spec.

but do holler and we will help you as much as we can with whats good and whats not :)
