help i cant use windows media player

i can hear music, but videos wont play, i just hear sound. but i can see videos in safe mode, even there it acts like it doesnt want to work. i have a pentium 2 dell inspiron laptop ( older model) connected with a 13 inch dell monitor. i went into bios to switch to an external monitor only, but both screens are still on. also the regular laptop screen is distorted and going bad because the wires conneccted from the base to the lcd screen are exposed and more than likely damaged.
