I ran this in ubuntu 7.04 to get higher resolutions for my monitor:

    sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom
    sudo sh -c 'md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf > /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum'
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Upon finishing the set up, my ubuntu will not bring up the desktop.

Is there a way to reset the changes to the original settings?

I have attempted to reinstall because the system is new and I do not have anything on the drive. On attempting this the install stops at 15% detecting file system.

Help with either will be good enough to get me going. I do not know much about the linux sytem, so simple explanations will be best.

I believe the command you seek is

    sudo startx

Did you install from a live CD where you had a desktop?

Yes, I installed from a live CD, and the live CD still produces a desktop. I do not have the time right now to test the "sudo startx" command, but I'll try it later and reply with results if there are any.

Bee Eff you may want to look in the beginner section over at the Ubuntu Forums.
