    On one of my computers (Laptop HP DV5000) with Windows XP on it. My husnad was on the internet and he said a box come up saying to install windows updates to restart computer now or later. He clicked restart now. It started to go through shutdown process and he said it came up and said program stopped working and to end now. After this the screen went black. I can not get the computer to boot up at all. In safe mode, normal mode, to restore it. or anything. With Safe Mode and Normal Mode it will come up like its coming on with the windows screen then after that the screen goes black but the mouse pointer is there and you can move it around but there is noting on the screen. The only thing I was able to get to is the dos prompt which I know nothing about or what to do in it. Does anyone have any suggestions or know what I need to do to get my computer on so I can try and attempt to fix it. Please HELP.

    Perphaps this or this link may be helpful to you.

    And if that doesn't work, try booting from your original CD, open command prompt (press r when asked) and enter;

    FIXMBR

    it will ask you if you really want to, press y. After this type;

    chkdsk /r

    once this is complete, restart and try to boot again, if you can boot, open CMD again (with the CD still in the drive) and type;

    sfc /SCANNOW

    that should fix your issue :)

    I do not have any disk. If I recall right the recovery stuff was built in? Not sure. I have looked every where and I have no disk for it. I dont ever remember having one when I got the computer. I found a Windows XP recovery for a DELL computer I used to have. Could I use this or would it not work. Or is there anything else I could do without the CD? or is there away I can get one.

    Thanks for the help.

    Can you borrow an XP disk from a friend perphaps? any disk will do as long as its the same as the one you have installed (either home or pro).

    Run scannow anyway. It can be done without the disk.

    Start -> Run -> write -> sfc /scannow -> let it run until the progress bar disappears.

    Same for chkdsk without a disk: Run -> write -> chkdsk /r -> click OK -> in the black window type y -> click Return -> reboot -> wait.

    sounds like explorer.exe has something wrong with it ... any cd xp or later will do for chkdsk /r ... run it first with the instructions i gave you earlier

    Ok still having problems When I turn on the computer it comes on with start with safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt and normal mode. They all will not work. With the safe modes one when clicked a hole page of multi (0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32 then on each line list different drivers. then a safe mode screen comes up it is black with safe mode written in all four corners and will do nothing else.

    With normal mode. The windows xp logo comes up like it is loading then a black screen comes up then will not do anything else.

    Then if I reboot with f8 held a screen comes up with these choices. All the safe modes, Enable Boot Logging, Enable VGA Mode, Last know Good Config, Directory Services Restore Mode, Debugging Mode, Disable automatic restart on system failure, start normal. reboot, or return to os choices menu.
    I have tired all the safe modes as described above
    Last know Config does exactlly like the start up in normal mode as described above

    Directory Services Restore Mode when clicked gives 2 choices microsoft Windows Recovery Console, or Windows XP media center edition.
    when the recovery one is clicked it comes up in like a dos format and ask which windoes install I want c/windows, d/minint, F/windows. I clicked the first one then just come up with the command prompts. I typed in the scannow like you said above and it said invalid command. Then when the other option xp media center edition is clicked it opens in a safe mode as described above with the black screen.

    What else can I do. I don't want to mess around to much by my self and really screw something up where the computer will never work again.

    Did you have a space between the c and the / ? Like this:

    sfc /scannow

    Try this: allow the computer to start up in "normal" mode, then when you get to the black screen with the cursor, press CTRL + SHIFT (right above CTRL) + ESC. This should open up the task manager. Then make sure you are on the "applications" tab, and click the "new task" button down the bottom of the screen. Then, in the box type "exporer.exe" without the quote marks.

    This should hopefully attempt to open explorer.exe which controls the start menu etc.

    Then you can continue troubleshooting as described above.

    CTRL + SHIFT + ESC? I thought it was CTRL + ALT + DEL? or do they both work?
