I hope that someone can help. I have McAfee virus protection through Comcast. Unfortunately, it did not protect me from getting this virus. The generic backdoor and generic fake alert completely disabled my computer. I wasn't able to even get the computer to start up beyond the Windows XP welcome sign. So, I decided to use the recovery CD that came with my EMachines computer. This has created a partition that allows me to post here and to use some of the original programs that came with my computer and the internet partially. I have no access, that I know of, to the programs that are in the backup file where the virus is. I am not very computer savvy but I am sure that if someone could give me some directions I could figure it out. I don't know if I should uninstall the recovery and then try to go into the back up and fix it from there or where to go from here. Help!!!!!

How many gigs do you have on the recovery partition? If you have enough to make due for a while, that should be OK. Then, to get your files, I reccomend using a LiveCD Linux Distro. Linux is an open-source OS. This OS can be loaded without installing. I reccomend Debian. If you use this CD, you can have access to all of your partitions. You can get access to all of your files. You can burn them to CD, and then wipe the hard disk clean, and then reinstall Windows. If you need help doing that, let me know.
Glad to be helpful. If you need any further help, please reply.

    Zack,
Thanks for your help. If I understand your post correctly, I should download Debian and burn that to a CD. Then I can access the partition to get access to my files. Then, wipe the hard disk clean.Alright. How or what should I use to wipe the hard disk clean?
I don't really have anything in the partition that I don't have a CD for, so, I am thinking that I could just go ahead and wipe the hard disk clean now. Thanks again.

Yes. Debian, or, now thinking about it, use http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html knoppix instead, is an OS that doesn't need to be installed.
**only do that if you want your files back**
Then, put in the Windows install CD. Boot from that. Press Enter to install. Press whatever it wants you to untill you get to the Partition area. Press D to delete the partition. ONCE THE PARTITION IS DELETED, THE FILES ARE GONE FOREVER. NO GOING BACK!!! Then, you can go through your Windows install. Press C to create a partiton. When it says format, make sure that you do not do the quick.
    Any more help, please post.
