    Hello,

I'm new to the forums. My son was at a site the other night, and it automatically installed outer info. I have the recent updates for Ad-Aware, and I have scanned my PC, but it didn't pick it up. The only things found was tracking cookies. I've read a little about this, and it seems to be a buger to get rid of.

I have XP PRO, svc pack 2, all security updates and IE 6.x . I am using Window's firewall, and I have AVG 7.5 AV.
I do see that outer info is listed in the add/remove programs, and there is also a folder under program files that is named outer info. However, the folder is empty. It's listed as well under start/program files/outerinfo. There's an unistall file and a terms file. However, neither are listed in the programs file folder. If I click on the terms file, I get this window with the following information:

"The item "Terms.rtf that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly."
"Nearest match based on size, date and type: C:\Documents and settings\Home\Local Settings\Temp/Terms.rtf"

I just exited out of that.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Hi Halo,

Thank you for the reply. :) I have read through the link you provided, and I have a few questions before I begin.

    1. Do I need to disable system restore first?
    2. I am running under "selective start up"

If I change this, it will prompt me to restart the PC. I haven't restarted the PC since outerinfo was installed, because I didn't know if other nasties may install if I re-boot.

Is it safe to do this?

    Hi

    1. System restore as mentioned in the guide in section 8. is to only be used once your clear of malware.

    2. If you dont uncheck from selective startup, all the malware will not be picked up by the scans so only ones found running will be cleared, but you will still have malware lurking.
