My needs are simple. I have a new Sony disc man mp3 player. I have cds. I want to move songs from those cds to the portable mp3 player. On my Windows 7 laptop I have WMP 12 which has no "Rip" command. I have searched many help sites about this to no avail. I downloaded Foobar, which will play my cd but will not let me rip the songs. I end up in a loop of requests about file types but never see a button that allows me to go ahead and do it. I've downloaded Audiograbber, which copies the cd but it doesn't have a library and the music doesn't appear in one anywhere else (like WMP 12). Maybe I'm stupid, in which case you might recommend a good tutorial or book that explains what i need to know to accomplish this task in 2013. Pardon the rant, but in 2003 I had Windows xp & WMP and I ripped songs all the time. No searches or troubleshooting necessary. They played on my portable device, mix cd's played in my car and on my home stereo.
How do I get there from here??
    Thanks,
    P

As far as I know, CDs still have music encoded in a .wav format (been awhile since I used CDs). So you should be able to explore your audio CD and have a bunch of .wav tracks (which will be monstrous in size). Then it's a simple step to convert/compress to .mp3, and plenty of programs do this and let you set the bitrate and so forth. I'm not the right person to make a recommendation, however.

In the left sidebar where your music is listed, right-click on the CD entry. You'll get a context menu with "Rip CD to library" as a choice.

That worked. I have songs saved to my library and that's a good start. Thanks!

I can help I think. In Windows Media Player 12 open the program, go to tools, options, then go to the Rip Music Tab. Check Rip CD automatically. So now when you open WMP 12 and put in a CD it automatically rips the CD for you. Let me know if that helps out
