Help Installing 98SE

Hello All,
Someone has given me his old laptop, a compaq 1200 XL-118 model. The
thing is a mess, so bad that I had to wipe the HDD using the Ultimate Boot Disk. I didn't have much trouble erasing the disk but installing the OS, which is 98SE, is giving me problems. I can get the PC to boot, but I only seem to get part of the OS working, Example: I only have two monitor displays, 2 bit color, black and white, and 16bit color. I only have one screen size 640 x 480.
I have about 93% of the system resources when I click the system's properties performance. It is as though the 98 CD doesn't have the complete OS on it.
The computer seems to work fine out side of this problem except sometimes
just pointing the mouse's pointer at a window closes or opens it without me
clicking on the left or right mouse button. I also have an XP OS disk that I may try out except this old laptop only has 64 MB of memory and 4 of that is for a cache I think. Anyway, any help on this topic will be appreciated. I may have more time to work on my Geekiness since my little boy will start school soon. Thanks, bluesteinm

 

Sounds as if you need to visit Compaq's website and download the driver for your video card/controller. I have this problem with a lot of the old laptops that I work on.

 

Hello Novice, I do not know if I can get on-line with the lap top. Can I
download the driver to this PC of a floppy?
Also I am pretty new jto Major Geek and I have trouble navigation the site.

Downloading the driver to a floppy shouldn't be a problem if the file is small enough to fit on it. Burning the file to a CD on a computer with a CD burner would be another option. Hope this helps!
