    Hi all
i recently obtained what i believe to be a working HP 5000n printer.
the printer has an ethernet port (HP jet direct card), a serial port and another port, no usb. no wireless.
my laptop does not have any hardware connections other than usb.
for now, i simply want to be able to connect my laptop to the printer every once in a while to print.

anybody here want to walk me through this?
    i have a usb-ethernet adapter
i have comcast cable with router.modem with available ethernet ports.
    windows 10 laptop
i can get configuration info off the printer if need be (it will print out the info)

thanks in advance for any help

    hi
    thanks for the reply.
are you saying the printer wont work with windows 10 because it isnt listed in the manual or do you have some other info? i am not doubting you, i just want to understand things better. the manual is from 2002 and windows 10 didnt come out until much later, i wouldnt expect it to be in the manual.
the printer was in use at work on the network. I would be surprised if they were using any of the windows versions listed.

that aside, i would still like to learn the setup process, even if it didn't work in the end. according to the IT guy at work, setting a printer up is simple and i feel stupid not knowing how to do it. plug it into the network, type IP address into browser, set up the printer, etc etc. unfortunately, the IT guy at work cant spend all his time walking me through this.

the manual talked about some 'jetadmin' software that could be used for setup, im under the impression that is optional and not absolutely required. from the manual- Network Administrators: If the printer is attached to a network, before you can print, the printer must be configured for that network using HP JetAdmin or similar network software. (See the getting started guide.)
i dont have the getting started guide. is there some type of general software package in windows or easily obtainable i could use to move this along?
thanks again in advance for any input

    Yes.
And it also won't work with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 & 8.1 simple because there are no drivers available. I checked the HP site and there are no software available to download. Something else, prior to USB, printers used to connect via a Parallel Port. You posted this printer has a Serial Port which was used almost exclusively for networked printers (and scanners).
You can try a Serial to USB converter but you still need the drivers.

IMHO... You are better off buying a straightforward Mono Laser printer. My Canon Mono Laser printer I got for free after buying 3 laser cartridges for less than $100. After 2 years the counter is showing 4,160 without a single issue. I admire you wanting to learn the setup process but frankly, without drivers, you'll be on the road to nowhere.

so looking at it more closely, manual says it has a serial port and also a parallel port.
does that change anything? im assuming youre going to tell me i still need drivers.

as far as a new printer goes, i would want a color printer. this one if monochrome only because it fell in my lap for free.

    thanks again

    Unfortunately, yes. :(
And then what about the cartridges? Even when they are still available, they just become more and more expensive. Also, cartridges cannot be filled over and over.

    Tip!
If you need to print colour pictures, save them as PDFs and have them printed at a printing outlet. It will work out much cheaper.

We still have HP 2200 at work and use windows 10. Just find the universal print driver and try it. Go in to the menus and print the network info. to find the IP, if it is static or DHCP.
If it is DHCP plug it in your network, print the network page to get the ip, go to "start" and type "view installed printers" open the app, add a printer, select local, create a new port TCP/IP, put in the IP of the printer and follow the prompts.

    thanks
i have a toner cartridge in the unit, and 2 more brand new cartridges in boxes. i have plenty of toner it appears. toner doesnt go bad, does it?
i probably wouldnt be printing many pictures, just color in reports and graphs or whatever

    sounds so easy. lol.
ok, now im on a mission.
will start tackling this more tomorrow.
like i said, even if i cant actually get this running, at least i will learn some stuff, which isnt bad.
    thanks all

    hey all
so, i picked up a usb to parallel cable and after some stumbling around i got this printer to work. so thats nice. im a bit sad i couldnt figure out how to add it to the network, but i can save that for another day.

the only problem im seeing so far is the printer wont print double sided. i have double sided selected, but it keeps printing single sided. this printer is supposed to be able to do double side as far as i can tell.
does this sound like some special setting im not seeing, or could it be a driver issue, or ?
im using PCL5 driver from HP. there is a PCL6, but i was trying that out first and wasnt having any luck getting the printer to work. i think it wasnt working. im a bit impatient and i may not have waited long enough for things to take hold.

Check that you have the accessories for double sided printing (different tray) and also look inside for the network card. 5000N.jpg
This is from the setup guide I found online.

    and
The HP LaserJet 5000 N and 5000 GN printers also include an
HP JetDirect 600N print server card with an additional three ports:
    LocalTalk, Ethernet 10Base-T (RJ-45), and 10Base2 (BNC).

    It probably lacks this
For connection to a fast Ethernet (100Base-TX) network, an
optional HP JetDirect 600N 10/100Base-TX print server is required.
This card features a single RJ-45 port.

and that's why it won't work as a networked printer.

I'm almost positive that optional card is no longer available but the setup species Windows 3.1 and 95.
