Help installing windows 98

I thought this was an easy thing. A friends HD died, so I got them a new one but when I tested the system for XP it was too old and could not support it. So I figured I could just install 98 again and it would be fine.

I did all the basics, partioned the 80gb into 4 drives, formatted each drive. Then I started the install, well after the scan it just goes to the command prompt. I can not get to the 98 install windows. I have tried 2 different 98 cd rom's. I have never had this problem before. I have even tried to copy the cabs to the c drive and install from the drive with the same results.

Any suggestions???

What file system are you using?

MAKE BOOT FLOPPY, 98CD NOT BOOTABLE

 

Right, it's no prob with the 98 boot floppy, if you don't have it you can make one from the 98 CD or download one here:

Can you give us the process you are going through to install? It sounds like you are just missing something simple.

My 98se CD is.

Were the orginal 98 CDs not bootable?

 

Steps to install
1. Boot disk
2 Format c:
3 Reboot with boot disk option 1 windows 98
4 CD starts runs scan disk
then takes me to a command prompt when it is suppose to start the installation


I put this all here for you, but have found out the reason it was not instaling. I took out one of the PC100 memory chips and it installed as it should. I never got one error message or anything about the memory. But figured it was worth a try. Finally got it installed. This is just a FYI for you guys, thanks for trying to help. I know it is a simple thing to do I have installed 98,xp, linux 100's of times. This is the first time I ever could not get it to work.
