When I click the IE icon on my taskbar (or what everthat art of my screen is called to the left of and larger than the system tray) it says
'Can't Open this item - it might have been moved renamed or deleted'
This is my normal way of accessing this program
I am unable to locate it by the menu that appears when I click on the start button nor it it present when I select 'all programs' and look through that list.
    It has gone.

How do I get it back ? (short of system restore)

    Hi

Right click and Unpin the IE icon on your taskbar for now. Then click Start and in Start Search box type IE and once Internet Explorer shows up right click and choose Pin to Taskbar

You should them be back to normal again.

If you cannot find IE still then open Computer and then C: drive and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer and right click the iexplore icon and Pin to Taskbar (this is the 32bit version)

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and same again iexplore icon and right click Pin to Taskbar for the 64bit version, just depends on which Windows 7 version you have, either will work ok, 32bit version seems better if you like media pages that use a fair bit of flash video

    Thanks for quick response David
Meanwhile I downloaded Firefox, and that's now on my taskbar although I told only to create to create a desktop icon, which I did subsequently.
I read your post, and searched for 'IE as directed (I had already typed 'internet explorer' in the search box with the the same result) - no IE program showed up, just some other stuff topped by 6 CP entries of which I could see three (uninstall install and change/remove program).

So I'm no further n, except I now have Firefox (this is safari which have never previously used)

In fact I think the IE icon on my taskbar has trasnformed itself into a what looks like a blank sheet of paper icon

    Hi

Do you not have Internet Explorer folders at the two locations below?
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

    with iexplore inside?

The blanks sheet of paper icon is that the location of an application is missing or more so missing from the Target path.

Yes, I have both of these folders and they both contain a number of files and folders in them including iexplore.exe

(I didn't think to look there before, because I thought that these would be buried in OSv folders somewhere)...as they are in program folders why don't they show up under "all programs" ?

... have just read your first post post in full...:-o

ok thanks David, it seems to be working now, has reappeared on the taskbar, though pin to taskbar did not seem too enough, it seems that I had to pin it to the start menu first/as well

No problems DQ, yeah surprisingly not buried and I think in part due to the anti-trust issues a number of years back, IE had to be easy to disable and in part you can, not advisable though, and if not saying you didn't like it you just default use another browser.

My pleasure, and thanks I will remember that needs pinning to start menu also, cheers.
