    Dear Forum,

A friend's laptop is not recognising the LAN cable when it is plugged in, and there is no internet connection. Could somebody please advise how to fix this?

    - The cable itself works in three other computers (so the cable is not the culprit)
    - After the cable has been plugged in, Windows does not react at all
    - Device Manager shows this under network adaptors
    1. 1394 - Networkadaptor
    2. Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 2200 BG Network Connection
    3. Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 2200 BG Network Connection - PANDA NDIS IM Filter Miniport
    4. Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Adaptor, Copper RJ-45
    5. Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Adaptor, Copper RJ-45 - PANDA NDIS IM FIlter Miniport
    6. WAN-Miniport (IP) - PANDA NDIS IM Filter Miniport

    - Numbers 3, 5, and 6 show a yellow circle with an exclamation mark on them
    - It says 'The device driver for this hardware cannot be loaded. The driver is possibly damaged or not available (Code 39)

    - The computer is an ASUS Laptop with INtel Pentium Processor 1.60GHz - 1.0 GB Ram, ATI Mobility Radeon X700.
    - The computer has Kaspersky Internet Security 9.0.0.459 installed (And had PANDA installed)

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

Can you give the model number of the laptop from the tag on the bottom? The 10/100 driver should be available on the Asus site. We can help find it with the model # of the laptop.

Asus doesn't allow a direct link to the driver.

So start at this page http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

    Select Product: Notebook
    Series: Pro 60
    Model: 60V

There is only one LAN driver. Download it using the Global link selection form the choices of Download from:.

It is a zip file. Unzip it on the laptop. Go into the unzipped folder and then into the WINXP folder and double-click the 2kSetup.exe file. It should run the installer.

    Any questions/problems ask.

Is the ethernet enabled in properities?

I have downloaded the correct driver. However, I have a few questions before installing it:

    1. Should I not uninstall or remove the 'doubled-up' drivers? (ie. the ones that end in Panda'

    2. How can I remove them? (I tried, and got the message 'unable to uninstall drivers - they may be relevant for start up')

The Ethernet is not 'deactivated'. (If that is what you mean by 'is it enabled').

    Thanks!

I see. I didn't realize they were doubled up and that PANDA was doing something to change connection privileges or such.

Hold off for a little bit and let me read up on what PANDA does and why those drivers aren't uninstalled when PANDA is uninstalled.

Which version of PANDA were you using? The full product name would be helpful.

Thanks for the quick reply Sach2.

I am reasonably certain my friend was Panda Internet Security. The version was 2008 or 2009, but it was uninstalled a while ago.

    Thanks!

I think the Panda drivers are definitely causing the problem. I can't seem to find a post that explains exactly how to get rid of them from outside the Panda program. I realize you have already uninstalled Panda.

Do you have an option to disable the three Panda drivers as opposed to removing them?

I successfully disabled all three 'Panda' drivers in the device manager. Rebooted the computer, but there appears to be no change: the system fails to recognise the LAN connection when the cable is plugged in.

I am also unable to uninstall the Panda drivers. Although they have been deactivated, the same message appears: 'The device was unable to be uninstalled. It may be necessary for starting the computer'.

Any further suggestions would be much appreciated :)

I would try following instructions 1-5 in this guide. http://www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallpanda.shtml

You may be able to just do the following and restart to see if resetting the winsock catalog works with the Panda drivers disabled.

It seems to have worked! The doubled-up drivers are now absent in device manager.

Moreover, the LAN cable seems to be working fine!

Thank you so much for your help! Really much appreciated.

I'm glad it worked for you and that it removed the troublesome ghost drivers. :)
