Help Laptop is running so slow.

Hello ...
I have a HP Laptop XP several years old
I run AVG for antivirus and have defragmented cleaned and still it runs so very very slow and locks up.. any suggestions on where to start to try and fix this..I dont know much about computors except cleaning defragmenting and antivirus.

Right now I am on my newer laptop and its a Toshiba Vista and will be working on this one to... but want the older one fix first... try out so to speak

Do you have CCleaner installed?

Thank you I downloaded CCleaner and it works wonderfully
much better then it did.. and I also check on the start up issue to and that also helped thanks again.. I can see this is going to be a great place to come..
