I want to start downloading videos from my son and play them. I don't know what I have or what I need to accomplish this. I am including a Belarc Advisor Profile (in 2 parts) hoping that it will help you tell me what to do.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ron

Are these videos off the internet or from a digital video camera?

If off camera they should be an a format that either plays through the cameras software, this software should also allow you to save in a more popular format e.g WMV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or even DivX

If off internet, then likely they are in DivX format.. so get the codec pack from below to add all known popular formats.

To play the videos its likely all you will need is the correct codec ( media file ) that will allow the video to play, this pack is a good one and dont be fooled by the name it works for other Windows versions http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Codec_Package_d5326.html

then you can play the back through Windows Media Player or another 3rd party program VLC Media Player is a goodun.

In addition to Halo's recommendation, I like the Storm codec pack. It's very complete, and includes a media player for all the codecs it installs (Media Player Classic: in appearance it resembles Windows Media Player from Win95). Get it here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Storm_Codec_d5491.html

Thanks for the info. I am downloading the app as I write. My plans are for my son to upload the video from his camcorder to a site (BTW, do you have a suggestion for one?), and I will download it and play it.

    Hi Ron

Actually yes and one you can protect the contents of in that if you have a Microsoft Passport Account ( Hotmail or MSN Messenger ) you can use this beta of Skydrive and create a fshared folder in which only you and who you add to the Permissions of that Folder as in "People I Choose" ( these have to be at present user who already are in your Passport Address list.

Skydrive http://skydrive.live.com/ ( 1GB of Free space and is quick in transfers *well only as quick as your internet speeds allow*, and suggested this as its secure in what you store, still would not store too personal stuff on any online storage eg. banking or very personal data, but for personal images and video its secure enough )

another I have used is http://www.4shared.com/ ( 5GB free Space but not as easy to use )

I have downloaded and installed Vista but I cannot get it to open. I'm assuming it should open up to a window where I can pick various settings, etc. I can open Common Tools but cannot set up a new user account - nothing happens. What am I missing?

    Hi Ron

I'm guessing you mean the Vista Codecs, well yes you can tweak some settings as they should be located in your Start > Program Files > VistaCodecs menu, BUT I know I tend to leave as default all the settings and they work fine with no tinkering. Just need the Video files to test now as you should ahve all the audio and video codecs needed to play any sort of video and especially if its a common make of camera.

Ask your son, what type of file the camera saves the videos as, it could be WMV, MPEG-5 or DivX etc.
