Hello. I would like to upgrade my desktop PC from Win98 to WinXP. I was told that it is best to do a clean install. However, I have no friggin' idea how to format my hard drive and need someone to give me simple ABC style directions or maybe direct me to a web page that can help me out.

Actually, all you need to do is BOOT from the Windows XP CD.

Put the CD in, ignore the autorun 'do you want to upgrade' window, restart.

Pay attention to the screen, when it asks if you want to run setup, press Enter.

Once setup loads it is fairly simple and easy to format your drive, it will tell you what to press to do what you want, so follow the instructions.

Remember, formatting will erase ALL data, so if you have programs or files you want to KEEP, than formatting is not what you want unless you have backed up your files on a separate media. If this is the case, than just choose "upgrade" when you insert your XP CD from Windows.

    Good Luck.
