I'm trying to purchase a cheap laptop here in the UK. I went to an online website; http://www.student-laptops.co.uk/ to have a look around.

I found a refurbished IBM Thinkpad 760, but when I called to ask about it, the guy told me it wouldn't let me download ANYanti-virus software!!

My question is this- Is he right? It has a low MB which can be heightened to 5MB. Shouldn't that be enough to support AntiVir and Sygate at least?

I don't understand how they can sell a laptop with a modem and tell me it's too old to take any anti-virus software.

Am I missing something here? I really need a good, but cheap (and I mean cheap) laptop. If this won't get me online (nothing fancy, just to access the web and my e-mails) what should I be looking for?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Sorry! I tried to edit my last post but I waited too long!

Here are the specs for that IBM...hope they'll help you tell me why it wouldn't allow me to download any anti-virus software. And if I can't is there ANY way I can protect this machine?? It's a good price for the UK, if I can get it safe to use online!

(PS- I know it doesn't include a Modem, but I can get that for a... 56K dial-up...which is included in the price.)

Even easier is to go to the bottom of this very page you are reading and click on Anti-Virus

Link for AVG Free version from Majorgeeks

That system is about 7 years old or more and would be a slug with anything but Win95. even 95 may not run well on it.
