    Hello,

I was told recently that I should not use CCleaner to manage my startup programs because it does something with msconfig....after that I was lost.

So having said that, I come here for guidance. I reviewed the HJT tutorial, but to be honest, much of this is flying over my head.

Could someone please assist me in properly setting up my startup programs, as there are many that I have disabled and do not use now (through CCleaner, but this isn't the best way).

    Thanks,

I downloaded the program, however I do not know what I am looking at or what to do. Some assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you installed it go into your Control panel, find Startup and double click to open it up. You'll see all the programs that are starting up on boot there (the bulk of which should be under the HKLM/Run tab). Uncheck the ones that you do not want starting up when you boot your computer.

On most desktop computers, there is a very limited number of programs that absolutely MUST start on boot. All those schedulers, updaters, reminders, etc., can be disabled.
On all my desktop PC's, I have only one or two items (icons) in my system tray.
Both items are also shown as selected in my MSCONFIG / Startup folder.

CCleaner? Every time I've tried that program it's corrupted my Windows and I've been forced to do a Ghost restore to fix things. :cry I won't be trying it again.

    Good Luck,

I'd like to hear more about these occurrences as I've only twice (and that's from running CCleaner on hundreds of PC's over 4 years or more) had problems which may have been caused by CCleaner and each time it was on PC's running Windows 98! Perhaps you could point me to one of your threads discussing your previous problems or begin a new one, I'd like to try to find out what happened in your instances?

@TheBlackCap, sorry for the interruption, normal service now continues ;)
