Help me please

OK i have a laptop gateway that im having a problem with formatting my hard drive i wanna format back to win98 i put the cd in the computer restarted followed the steps to format and then it tells me i dont have enough space to install win98 so it sent me into dos mode whihc then i tried the format commands and none of them worked it tells me command invalid so then i try to start my computer with nothing and it goes to the gateway screen then it goes to a black screen with just a line at the top left corner i dont know what to do i put the cd in went boot from disk when to start setup and it jsut gives me the same problem it says i need to format c drive and i do gives me error problems im confused can someone please help me
