Hello. This is my first time posting in the forum. I am hoping that someone can help me. Last night I downloaded ccleaner out of curiousity. After running the program I rebooted, and my computer is barely working. My OS is XP, and I ran version 1.26.

For starters, I can't get the system restore to turn on.

I booted up in safe mode and checked 'restore when system last worked properly'. A message displays 'no changes have been made'.

I don't have internet access anymore (I have a cable connection).

In services (within system tools) almost everything is disabled. I can change everything to automatic, but if I click start on anything I get an error 'the plug and play service is not available'.

When I tried to turn on Windows Firewall I received an error 'Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service'.

Can someone please help? I am using my roommates computer to post this message. I will check often for a response. I am a novice, and I don't have any idea what any of this means.

In addition, I did merge the backup file (about 10 times now).

    K:rolleyes:

Well, I was going to suggest a visit to CCleaner's forum to see if they have a bug listed there for this problem, but I see you've already posted there.

When you say you've reinstalled the backup, I assume you are referring to a registry backup? As good as CCleaner's cleaning functions are, I've never felt comfortable using their registry cleaner as I feel it is too aggressive.

I've never heard of it disabling most services though.

I don't think the two are related.

I typically use ccleaners built in backup to backup any changes it does with the registry. Found a couple of times where the registry clean hosed a machine or two. But, running the reg fix always fixed this issue.

For the network situation. You may want to try running: Winsockfix XP : http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4372

After running and reboot, check to see if you can browse.

Also, try to see if you can obtain an ip.

    Thank you for responding.

When you refer to the networking issue, what exactly do you mean? As for obtaining an IP, could that have been altered somehow within my system?

I feel like I'm asking stupid questions. I've been so focused on regedit for many hours now that your thoughts have brought me to a halt. Thank you for a change in direction.

    Many Thanks

I do understand your point. What is so hard about this is that my computer was working the best that it ever has (fastest speed I've ever seen), and within a matter of 5 minutes it's completely crippled.

Do you have any idea what would disable most of my devices? All ideas are appreciated at this point. I'll be gone for a few hours to implement some other suggestions.

    Many Thanks
    K
