ok, so im getting a new dsl provider. the only difference is i think the protocol might be different, (something about bridging) and i will have a static ip as opposed to a dynamic one. my question is: i have a home network setup, will i need to change all the settings to reflect the ip, or can i still use dhcp?

read all the documentation that comes with the new dsl. it will explain what you have to do. we can only guess what settings you will have to change.

your router should sort through all of that for you

If you are connected directly to the Modem and your Computer’s Network Setting is set to Auto you probably do not have to do any thing.

If you’re getting Modem/Router Combo you will have to set the Router only.

If you are now on Software PPPOE authentication you might need to get rid of the PPPOE software.

I would suggest that you do nothing until you get the Hardware in your hand and see what you are dealing with.

    Hey DanTek...

Try giving your router your static IP and set it as a DHCP server and your pcs to "obtain an IP address automatically." You don't need to use pppoe, just use TCP/IP to allow your router run the show.

I just retired my Linksys firewall router and picked up an 8 port Netgear prosafe VPN firewall. It's groovy.

    Congrats on becoming speedy!
