    Hello,

So I'm new to building my own pc, but I followed this youtube guide:

I bought everything he recommended. But when I tried to install the motherboard into the case, the I/O shield didn't match up with the motherboard! The ports on the I/O shield are spaced much farther apart than the way they are spaced on the motherboard. Here is a video showing this:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/177qpDmaLpXGZNJ28W_uEPgEc8HxYnRmn/view

Everything on the internet tells me that these two products are compatible with each other. I'd just like to know what's going on. I probably need to shop for another case, right?

Super grateful for any thoughts of yours at all!

    Best,
    Randy

That I/O shield looks ancient (parallel port?) and is wrong for the MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus. The correct shield should have been included in the 'board packaging, was it bought new?

Contact the seller for a replacement.

Where did you get the shield?

As satrow noted, every motherboard comes with its own I/O shield and that should have been included in the motherboard box. So it would appear your motherboard was previously used, or at least, the box opened, and the wrong I/O was put back in.
:( Did you watch it? If you had, you would easily see this problem has nothing to do with the video, many of which are excellent tutorials, BTW. I just viewed that YouTube video, and found nothing wrong with it.

In fact, this "tuber's" video is extremely valuable and informative. Why? Because if you look 2 minutes and 46 seconds into the video, you can see the I/O shield that came with that motherboard and note it clearly is different than the one the OP shows in his video.

So this problem is about an incorrect I/O shield and has nothing to do with the YouTube video or the presenter.

@Billy00008 - You need to contact the seller of the board and nicely, but firmly complain. If no help there, then maybe MSI can help - though I would expect some frustrating delays. Frankly, IMO if the seller does not profusely apologize and immediately send the correct shield by express mail, I would demand a full refund and buy a "new" board in an unopened box from elsewhere.

While running without a shield with no problems is possible, it is not recommended. Not only does the shield help facilitate proper air flow through the case and prevent excess dust from getting drawn inside, the shield's primary function is to suppress EMI/RFI emanations escaping from the computer, and to block ("shield") EMI/RFI from outside sources interfering with the computer. So every attempt to get the correct shield should be made.

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful replies! It's deeply appreciated.

My motherboard was indeed bought new from the exact link the youtube guy recommended: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T5QDRFX?tag=glchptest-20

This is indeed the I/O shield from the motherboard packaging. Does this mean there's no problem with my case? It also feels like my case is too small for the length of my motherboard, but I got too caught up with with the I/O shield not matching to pay enough attention to this. It's definitely been a struggle to make the screws line up, but I admit I didn't use the standoffs yet like I believe I should have. Still, it really feels like the motherboard is too long.

Yep, that's why I'm grateful for all of you!

I see. I will do what you suggest, thank you! I should probably post pictures of my case I feel like to make sure there's no issues with the compatibility there too. It just currently feels too long.

You all are the best! Will let you know what happens.

    UPDATE:

I just tested my case without worrying about the I/O shield. It fits just fine!!! I'm contacting amazon support now and cancelling my new case order. Man, it's crazy how just one little thing being wrong can completely throw me off ><

Thank you all so much for your help!!!!

He buys two of everything so he has more things to break and then send back under warranty/RMA.

Because that was not the focus of the video. So it was unfair and improper to criticize that video in particular and especially "ALL" YouTube videos and "tubers" as you did.

And you just demonstrated my point and contradicted yourself at the same time by posting that video.
Yes. Your case is fine. Note the ATX Form Factor standard dictates a specific area where all those connectors MUST be located on the motherboard AND where that group of connectors will appear on the back of the case. ATX also dictates where all ATX motherboards will be mounted in all ATX cases. This ensures that rear I/O connector area on the motherboard will line up properly with the cut-out in the cases rear panel when the motherboard is properly mounted inside the case. So the dimensions of the case's cut out, and the shield's dimensions will always be compatible.

HOWEVER, the ATX Form Factor does not dictate where each connector will appear inside that shield. This is why each motherboard has a unique shield layout.

So if you got a sealed motherboard box, and you are sure it was (or was supposed to be) new and got the wrong shield in the box, you need to contact the motherboard maker to get the right one.

You are right. Thank you! So this was all a blessing in disguise. I contacted the seller and they told me the motherboard had the wrong I/O shield placed in it. I was like"How could that happen if it is new?" And the guy told me that it was actually refurbished, which I didn't realize I had bought! So I am just returning it and spending the extra $100 or so to get a brand new motherboard. I never would have realized my motherboard wasn't new if it had come with the proper I/O shield! So I'm glad I know now.

    Thanks for your help!!!!

Screwups are disheartening for sure. But they are inevitable, even with the best and most reputable vendors. So how a vendor handles their screwups is very telling.

Some will bend over backwards to avoid taking responsibility and some even will blame the buyer. :( I typically will NEVER do business with them again, and will tell all my friends who not to do business with.

Others will readily admit their mistake, take responsibility, and bend over backwards to make it right. I will do business with them again and I will tell my friends how they did me right. It sounds like your vendor is doing the right thing here.

As far as refurbished - I hate that word. It suggests the item was faulty and fixed. It might be. But it might also have been returned because it was the wrong color or wrong size. But because it was opened, it could not be sold again as "new". So they label all returns as "refurbished".

That said, the item (or its webpage) should have been labeled as Refurbished. If not, then that is a problem.

I have almost been caught by that too on Amazon and Newegg. But usually the cheap price is a clue. And after closer examination, the words "Used" or "Refurbished" were found before I put my money down.
