I just received my cakewalk program. When I went to the install screen, it informed me that I needed DirectX 9.0b and that it was going to install it for me. When I clicked next, it started the install process. and 3/4 of the way through, a message popped up that said, "A file version could not be verified or was incorrect." When I went to the windows website and tried to install it from there, it got about half the way there and then it said "directX did not copy a required file." and when I say ok, it says installation failed.

Can some one help me? I don't know what to do. I have Yahoo messenger if someone has it available.

You may already have it installed, try the steps below and see if it gives you a version. Also, look here under Cakewalk http://www.etcetera.co.uk/FAQs.shtml

Double click on My Computer, then on your 'C' drive, then the 'Program Files' folder, then the DirectX folder, then 'setup' and finally on the 'DxDiag.exe' file. This will bring up a DirectX diagnostic utility that will show what version of DirectX you are using.

I know, but when I do that it says I'm running on 8.1, and if I completely uninstall Direct X and try the one on the disk, it still does the same thing. Something is conflicting with Direct X, and I'm not sure what I can do about it. I've done scan disk and defragged, and tried install both with and without virus protection on. tried both on and off line. I still get the same messages for both 9.0b and 9.0c. ?????

OK. Hold on for some other replies, maybe someone will have other possible solutions for you.

Windows Installer may be the culprit. Uninstall your Windows Installer then install Windows Installer 2.0 whick is the latest version that will run on 98.

It seems to me I remember a couple of peope with DX9 had trouble installing a version Cakewalk (Sonar) because it would *only* work with 8.1 ... I *think* they solved it by a registry hack -I know that you seem to be having the opposite problem but maybe they're related(?) -wish I could remember the details of the fix but I can't...
    sorry.
