I am having trouble with my newly updated and installed Norton Internet Security 2005, on XP. Since I've installed it today, I cannot access the internet for anything. Beside needing to access Symantec to get NAV liveupdates, I can't even get any browser to open while NIS is enabled. I am on now because I have Disabled NIS, but now lie in wait for an attack from a virus.... I thought that perhaps Norton's firewall was conflicting with Windows firewall, so I looked up how to turn it off and tried to. Below is the message I got. How could I possibly be missing WMI?? I do have Winxp SP-1 and have the reinstall disk, but don't know how to install it or what it is called on the reinstall disk. I had created a system restore, but apparently it wasn't soon enough, as it hasn't been corrected and I ended up having to reinstall NIS. I am concerned that my pc is in dire straights. I am a newby but am trying to learn fast. Can anyone help, or do I need to take it out and shoot it?

    Thanks,
    Linda aka pansygirl

Go to start, run and type:

    Services.msc.

Make sure ALL WMI (WIndows Management Instrumentation) services are running. Let us know if they are, or, you cannot get them to do so. Note all errors.

Ok, I ran this several times. I don't know if I should have or not, but I did change quite a few of them from Manual or Disabled settings to Automatic.

The following are problems I encountered, even after rebooting. I tried running and turning off NIS.

AppMgmt: Error 126: Specified Module could not be found.

Eventlog: Error 1501: No event log file could be opened, so the event
    logging service did not start.

HTTPFilter: Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

HidServ: Error 126: The specified module could not be found.

IPv6FwHlp: Error 1083: The executable program that this service is
configured to run is does not implement the service.

Netlogon: The Net Logon service on Local Computer started and then
stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for
example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.

mnmsrvc: The NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing service on Local
Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if
they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts
    service.

SysmonLog: The Performance Logs and Alerts service on Local Computer
started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have
no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.

WmdmPmSN: Error 1083: The executable program that this service is
configured to run in does not implement the service.

RasAuto: Error 1717: The interface is unknown.

RemoteAccess: (Originally it started then stopped. Startup type was
manual, so I changed to automatic, then I got this message): Windows
could not start the Routing and Remote Access on Local Computer. For
more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft
service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code
    1717.

SAVScan: Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

SCardDrv: Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

SNMP: Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

SNMPTRAP: Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

SNDSrvc: Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control
    request in a timely fashion.

ccPwdSvc: Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control
    request in a timely fashion.

SPBBCSvc: The Symantec SPBBCSvc service on Local Computer started
and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work
to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.

Schedule: Error 1717: The interface is unknown.

UPS: Error 2481: The UPS service is not configured correctly.

upnphost: The Universal Plug and Play Device Host service on Local
Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if
they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts
    service.

Hope this reveals what is needed to fix this. If the settings I changed from manual to automatic are a problem, I'm in trouble, because I didn't take a screen print of the original settings before making the changes, which would have been the smart thing to do. Hope I haven't created more of a problem.

I look forward to hearing from you, so I can hopefully get this thing fixed. This forum is awesome!!!

    Many thanks,

Well Adrynalyne, you have the crap scared outta me.  I'm gonna start praying to the Almighty God of the Computer, that you or someone can walk me thru this reasonably painlessly. I am disabled and LIVE on the pc. This is NOT good news for me. Thanks for all of your help!!

    Thanks,

I don't have SP2, would it be better if I installed it, or will that just make matters worse?

Regarding Sp2, don't worry about it for now.

Should I still go to this site and try it, without SP2?

Ok, I've completed all of that and I'm praying that it is all ok. We have a home network, so I made sure I read about each setting, so I could be sure that I didn't block networking. Now the only problem I can still see, is that I can't access the internet if NIS 2005 is enabled. Anyone have a clue what I could still be missing? I have checked on Symantec's site and haven't found anything.

Adrynalyne, thanks for all of the help with the WMI issues!! I bookmarked and printed the info for future reference. Hope I'll never need it, but have it if I do. lol

    Thanks again,
    Linda

Ok, I think I have most of this worked out. System seems to be running smoothly. I had to uninstall/reinstall NIS and now it's great, except for 2 things. 1) I can't set it on automatic live update and 2) my Incredimail will not download email from my ISP. I'm guessing there is a areason and it's that Incredimail is not a great product. It ran fine until i corrected all of my settings in Services and installed NIS 2005. I will work on it! Thanks soooooo much for all of your help!!

    Linda
