I wonder if someone can help me. All of a sudden my speakers stopped working. I just removed a bunch of spyware and then my speakers stopped working. I went to sound and audio devices and it is not reconizing any audio device. I know I have them hooked up properly, because up unitl 2 days ago they were working fine. Can someone help me?

I'm taking the easy way out on this. Go to Dell and click the "Add or edit service tag" and then "Find my service tag". Dell will tell you exactly what driver you need.
    Dell Support

Or just look down a little and you will see audio. That driver says optional and I think you will need the Realtek driver, too. See what Dell has to say and then let us know.

I forgot to mention that I have a different set of speakers than what came with the computer. I have Cyber Acoustics CA-3001 speakers and the computer is no longer reconizing it.

This is the driver they say is optional, but then I guess sound is optional for some people.
    ADI 198x Integrated Audio

Download it and install it. Then we will know if you need the Realtek driver, too.

Did you double click the file to get it to install? Re-start your PC also. I'm going to look for the Realtek driver for you board. I will post it soon.

Actually, you may want to verify that the speakers are working correctly first. If you have an Mp3 player or something else that can use headphones, plug your speakers in there to test them.

Also, be certain that the speakers are plugged into the correct port on the back of the computer. If they are plugged into the microphone port, for example, you obviously wouldn't have any sound.

If you've checked and the speakers are fine and are plugged into the correct port, then you may want to check and see if it's even a driver issue. Right click on My Computer->select Properties->Hardware Tab->Device Manager. Verify that there are no yellow exclamation points (or red Xs) on any icons.

:banghead Good idea....didn't think about that when the OP said he had different speaker. He did say he had malware removed and I checked the forum here and they had helped him. Sometimes, malware corrupts the drivers, that's why I went this way.

    @ steveostl
After checking your speakers and if you still have no sound, goto:
    Start>Run and type in services.msc
    Hit Enter.
Scroll down until you find Windows Audio. Open it by double clicking on it. Make sure it is started, if not, start it.
    Check your sound again.

Oh, it absolutely could be a driver issue. It was the first thing I thought of, but since a lot of us here are MG are more technical than most (especially with computers) we tend to jump to these conclusions rather than starting with the most simple solution. I am definitely guilty of this too sometimes. hehe :D

;) And speaking of basics, double click the volume icon to make sure the master volumes are set properly.
