Hi all, I have just got delivery of a new Radeon9600 pro card. I have a GF440mx installed. Heres my problem. I have to uninstall the current driver to install the new card. I follow the instuctions.. that is... go to add/remove programs and uninstall the nvidia drivers. EVERY time I do this it says the sys has to restart to complete. When I restart the GF440 is detected and the old drivers are ( I presume ) installed. I check this by going to device manager... it shows the nvidia drivers there. I have trolled the net and see all sorts of stuff there which is way beyond this mere mortals capabilities I see that even if the nvidia drivers are uninstalled there is residual stuff that should be removed. I am going to look here for driver utilities to see if there is something there to see to the stuff left. ANY HELP would be GREATLY appreciated.

Dont know if this is relevant but the driver version is 2.8.3.2 dated 08/03/02

I have found driver cleaner3 here and got it ready to use... WHEN I can.. :p

    XP home SP1
    Pentium 4 2.53
    512ddr
wish i had a Radeon 9600 in.. LOL

Ok. Well, once you've uninstalled the drivers, turn the machine OFF, install the new card and then clean up any nVidia drivers after the new card is up and running. As that one boot where youve just got the new card in and installing the drivers from the CD, you should be running generic Windows VGA driver.

The GF4 will not be re-detected, as its not there, and the Radeon will be running on a standard driver, which means you can clean out the old nVidia drivers. Then install the new Radeon drivers. Restart and let the Radeon drivers calibrate themselves (they do that) and you should be a happy camper!

Perhaps a bodged solution, but it should work alright.
Just done somthing simelar but replacing the intergrated graphics, which was a right pain as theres no way to disable them, so i had to uninstall the drivers, turn off, go into bios, change from intergrated to PCI, reboot again, install the drivers, disable the Intergrated graphics (not uninstall...) in device manager, restart, let them calibrate, restart again, reset the BIOS to PCI again (for some reason installing drivers makes it think the PCI card has failed and it reverts :S) and now its running well!

    THANKS GOLDFISH :)

Actually I just came back to say that i got the thing done. I got Drive Cleaner3 here .. then... looking closely at the readme file I found the solution. VERY close to what you posted for me. If anyone has the same prob just point them to Drive Cleaner.. then.. BINGO..

Too true. If i ask a question in Software or somthing, I am always sure to answer it myself if i come across the soltion by myself. It just makes life easier for someone who googles a problem, and finds my identical problem in a forum post. More often if i try searching for a problem like that the post doesnt have an answer after it, as the person has worked it out and just left the topic.

Anyway, glad to hear you got your problem fixed. I'll add Driver cleaner to my toolkit! :)

Oh and I'll settle for a rep point OR a tub of rockie road. But i think the postage would be more than is worth it :p

Uninstalling Nvidia/ATI drivers while running XP

GOLDFISH.. I promise cat won't eat ya :)

It costs NOTHING to say thanks. I sure appreciate help when I need it and will always try to give it where I can. Anyway... kinda from the horses mouth ( Drive Cleaner Readme ) Heres the solution I found. Just thought it might be usefull.

    1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect ( dont be connected to the net... this is important )
    2. Remove nvidia/ATI from add/remove programs
    3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
    4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
    5. Navigate to device mgr->display adapters->highlight nVidia/ATI and click uninstall or remove but don't reboot
    6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
    7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
    8. Run Driver Cleaner
    9. Empty recycle bin and reboot ( here I put the new card in before booting up again)
    10. Install the new drivers

As you can see this works exactly the same way to remove ATI drivers.

    Once again.... THANK YOU :)

errrr here come me cats...... better get off here now.... ohhh goldfish "CHOMP" from the cats.. LOL
