I think this is about my tenth question involving getting the new rig running smooth. I am at the point where I am working out details like networks, USB ports, etc. So thanks to all that have helped so far.

Now on to my next question:

I am trying to install a wireless router. It is a Linksys WRT54G router. When I use the automated install routine it tells me I have no connectivity to the internet. Here are the specifics:

My normal setup works fine. I have a Motorola SB5120 that does works when connected directly into the computer.

When I hook the Motorola into the Linksys and the Linksys into the computer I get all appropriate lights lit on the Linksys indicating all is working well and ready to be setup. However, when the setup program tries to access the internet it tells me that internet cannot be accessed. I unplugged and reset both the modem and the router, but no success. I still get the Windows "network is not connetcted" or When I remove the router and hook the Motorola directly into the computer everything works fine again.

I do have Zonealarm running which I disabled and Antivir which I did not. However, I do not think that Anitivir is the problem. I can try, but I do not think that will help.

So, the short of it is the Motorola works fine on it's own. When I hook the router up all lights say go but in the end a new go. It seems the Linkysys is not functioning correctly or the Motorola does not the like the Linksys. I forgot to add I have a Microsoft Network card MN-130 handling the incoming Ethernet cable into the computer. I am running XP SP2 with a broadband connection.

Any ideas >Thanks for any help.

Might be as simple as needing to reboot the computer as well. Many occasional cablemodem/router/PC internet connectivity issues can be solved by powering off all three, then powering up, in order, the modem, the router, and finally the PC. Allow both the modem and router to complete their power-on self tests before proceeding to power up the next device.

Is your LAN Connection's TCP/IP Properties set to obtain IP and DNS automatically?

Maybe you've already thought of this and didn't mention it....

When the Motorola cable adapter (some call it a modem, but I think that's not accurate) is hooked directly to your machine, your ISP's domain host controller sees your machine, recognises the MAC address provided by your network card, and provides the IP address that you must have to be able to surf the Internet.

When you put the router in the link, your ISP's domain host controller no longer sees your machine. It sees only the router, which will have a different MAC address. Some ISPs won't provide an IP address to a machine that has a MAC address that is unknown to them, so they require you to log on through a specific URL so that you can register the router's MAC address.

Is this an issue? Has it been dealt with? Your ISP's tech support should be able to tell you whether this is an issue. If it is, he can walk you through the registration process if you can't find it in whatever documentation your ISP provides on its website or in hard copy.

I have not tooled with it since you last reply. I am going to give it another sophomore try. I am not sure what is going on, as it all worked fine with my last rig. The modem worked fine with my laptop and the wireless router.

I think I am going to have to give Comcast tech a call.

I will update whenever I get around to fixing things. I will explore your suggestions.

    Thanks.
