I was writing this before and lost it so I hope this isn't a repeat.

Anyway, I am a technical novice and am having a problem with a network drive.

My house has a wireless network over a Belkin pre-N router which includes 3 desktops and 2 laptops. The network also has a Buffalo 300 G drive attached to the router and mapped as z:

My problem is that one of the desktops now shows the z icon as disconnected. The other computers on the network are still accessing the z drive just fine. The problem computer is a pretty new HP Media Center.

I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Greeetings,
Ok, have verify that the third pc has proper rights to connect to the z drive? also did you check the box to have the drive reconnect at logon?
to make sure that this is not an issue, disconnect the drive and re-mapped it. Then you can verify that it reconnect at logon by checking the box. You can also verify communication by pinging the host pc that Z is mapped to make sure there isn't another issue why the drive is not active. give that a try, and see what happens.

I'm not sure I understood everything you said. It was working two days ago so I assume that means the rights are OK. The box to reconnect at logon is checked. I don't know how to ping the computer.

The only thing that I know of that changed was that I downloaded a new version of Itunes. I can't see how that would cause a problem, but???

ok,well lets take a look at the event viewer, and see what happen since the last time there was an active connect to drive Z.

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. Or, open the MMC containing the Event Viewer snap-in.
    2. In the console tree, click Event Viewer.
The Application, Security, and System logs are displayed in the Event Viewer window.

You want to focus on the application log and system to gather any info that can relate to what maybe causing you to lose connection. try this and see if it helps. I'll keep search for answers to help you out.

I looked at the Event Viewer and under the system log I found a whole bunch of messages (probably 100) which said "an error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk\d during a paging operation." D is identified as the HP-RECOVERY drive. I looked at the microsoft message which said it is an I/O error. Don't know what this means either.

    Thanks for your efforts.
