I had a friend borrow my laptop. I had not made a restore disk. When I got it back and turned it on an all black screen appeared

"" WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT:
    <WINDOWS root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

I have tried the reboot menu and restore to last known good config..
Does anyone know where I can get a copy free of the Restore disk?

Unfortunately ~Q~, that MS article only applies to windows NT and 2K.
I suspect the person may be running XP or Vista. Have another link?

Not knowing exactly what model, there are 48 that start DV6000,

you might be able to purchase a restore CD from HP.

I've purchased CDs from HP in the past.

If there is a hidden partition, with the restore on it, read through this

you may be able to recover your laptop.
