help- no usb... can't use cdr

...please, someone help. i recently reformatted and rebuilt sony laptop vaio running win 98 and now i cannot find a way to get the thing to read drives on the usb, when it used to be just fine... i couldn't find anything usb related in bios, and supposedly all the drivers are enabled and work... it just won't see the drive- it hangs every time i try to use an app like the cd burner because it won't recognize the drive thru usb- been spending weeks trying to get this machine to work like it used to, it's getting very frustrating!

 

ah, thanks for reply, this info might be useful to sony vaio/win98 users: i fixed this problem which might be a sony only type of snag: when fixing the boot order of the machine after a reformat, make sure the boot order is diskette>cdrom>hard drive1 ...and in the control panel devices list make sure that whichever drive you got has 'auto insert notification' and 'disconnect' unchecked in the properties menu...whew!

 

...and i found some essential updates for this machine on Sony's website, a crucial one being "bad cmnd_.exe"whew!
