    Hello,

I know there has been numerous threads on how to fix the no audio device problem, but I have tried almost every one I can think of. I went to the Acer website and downloaded all the drivers that fit my computer. I went to the Realtek website and downloaded their audio drivers, still nothing. I tried looking in BIOS, which was suggested, nothing there. I have no idea where to turn or how to fix this annoying problem that I have been trying to fix for about a year now. I even restarted my computer back to factory settings twice to try to fix the problem with the backup disks and even did a system restore. I am not afraid to lose anything on my pc, it can be wiped clean again without any issue. I also ran EVEREST Home Edition to get some info.

One side note. Before I did the system restore, if I tried to increase or decrease the volume on the keyboard, nothing would show up. The sound icon is not in the bottom right corner. Since I did the system restore, when I click volume increase or decrease on my keyboard The Volume sign shows up in the middle of my screen with a bunch of vertical bars in a horizontal row. They are skinny bars showing that the volume is the lowest, I think the bars get thicker from left to right as the volume is increased. The volume is stuck and wont change from the keyboard input. Also I get an error when starting up Age of Empires 3 saying there is a sound issue that needs to be fixed. If that information can be helpful just let me know.

    Please help.

This is what I know about my computer:
    Acer aspire 5100
windows xp media center edition cersion 2002 service pack 2
    AMD Turion 64X2 Mobile
    1.60 GHz, 768 MB RAM
ATI SB450 - High Definition Audio Controller

Let me know if you need any other information.

I tried all 3 and still nothing. Same old No Audio Device and the Acer support website had nothing that I could find. I know there is a posibility that the sound card is broken or disconnected, is there any way to check that? One person on this website said that it is highly unlikely that the card is broken. Thank you for the suggestion.

Hi, Have you tried this yet........

Uninstall the Onboard sound device.....(Device Manager)

    Shutdown.

remove laptop battery and power cord, press and hold the start up button for at least 30 seconds.

Clear the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery.

When you re-enter the OS it should find new hardware.

I would strongly suggest that you update your OS to service pack 3 also.

    Hopefully this should work !!!!

Forgot to add that the longer you leave the CMOS battery out the better, i would suggest at least 30 minutes!!!

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, nhibbard.

If iain.t's suggestions don't pan out, since you're running XP SP2, try this:

    1. Uninstall any audio drivers.
    2. Download and run Driver Sweeper.
    3. Download and install the Microsoft XP UAA driver.
    4. Reinstall the audio driver(s).

    Hi

Just before you try Caliban's info above I would just to make sure install/re-install the Chipset driver HERE for your laptop then reboot and do the steps Caliban posted.

Hello everyone for all the help, I really appreciate it a lot. Sorry to say that I am not exactly sure how to uninstall my audio drivers or uninstall the Onboard Sound Device in the Device Manager. I opened it up and one thing that caught my attention was under Network adapters was Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC, I can right click on that an uninstall it. I also looked under Sound, video and game controllers, but I am scared to uninstall anything since I am not sure what I am exactly looking for. Also finding the CMOS battery shouldn't be too hard right. I am just going to unscrew my panel and look for a little circular battery on the motherboard? Thank you all of your help and support. I forgot to add, I ran a windows update and I downloaded everything it found for me. So I have SP3 now. Thanks again.
