I was thinking about getting my brother a Plextor 12X DVD+/-RW Drive, Model PX-712A Black, Retail from NewEgg.com. I was just wondering everyones opinion on DVD Burners and if it would be a usefull gift.
Also I was thinking about getting him a 120GB Harddrive from Western Digital. Does Western Digital make good Harddrives? I haven't really heard of them before.

What out of the two gifts you are thinking about would he get the most use from or what does he need more urgently?

Western Digital have been in the hard drive industry for 34years and are one of the top storage manufacturers along with companys like Maxtor, Seagate, Hitachi etc etc

and if he has a SATA compatable motherboard they have a nice Raptor hard drive with a 10k rpm spindle speed, whereas most of the others are only 7500rpm.

Plextor hardware I have not used BUT the idea to save data to DVD is a good one if you have alot of data to store as they have a higher capacity over CDRs so for backup media they are superb.

The choice is what you feel he would like the most or get the most enjoyment from, whichever you choose I would imagine will love it :)

    Alright thanks for information.
FutureShop is selling a WD harddrive which is 160GB for 147 Canadain, and the 80GB is selling for 149. The 160GB harddrive is a limited edition. Im thinking of getting him that.

LOTR all 3 episodes in one isn't out in UK yet so i cant help there.
But WD make good h/d's and i have been impressed with maxtor too, always recommend them to friends.
as far as dvd goes, plextor make good and reliable products, as do liteon and sony and pioneer, so i have found, but its all down to your opinion, and pricing.

I've always been more impressed by Seagate. I've burned through two Western digitals, but I've got a ten year old Seagate, and it's still kicking, for the most part anyway.

I too have had problems with Western Digital, but they do make great drives. I'm sure my experience is not common & the RMA process was as painless as it gets. ;)

On the Hard Drive....this WD 120gig with the 8meg Cache is a great deal. Make sure it has a 3 year warranty, not just 1 year. ;)

As far as the DVD burners go................I just got a Lite On Dual Layer & it's a great drive for the money. ;)
