hi folks... I'm about at my wits end now...

Finished building a new pc yesterday....

    Abit UL8 m/board
    AMD 64 3000 venice socket 939
    1 gig of geil memory
Ati radion 8500 64meg agp card
    nec 4550 dvdrw

    3 hard drives.

I got the pc up and running.. been using it through the day.. its been up and running since yesterday evening...

approx midnight tonight I was in the process of writting a dvd... and poof.. the F-ing thing resets... and keeps reseting..
    With no rhyme or reason...

any one got any ideas... remembering I've had the machine up and running for about 12 hours at least... with no probs..

I checked the bios for the temps... cpu is coming in at 31-34' C... sys temp is 22 - 24' C....
left it on the bios for 7 mins, and kept watching the temps.. hence the range...

so.... what does ya all think?

    Jay

do a system restore back to the day you built the computer.

erm... i cant.... it resets before you can use the desktop....

    its really freaky..

I tried to see what processes were running in taskmanager... but.. it wont stay up long enough for me to even press ctrl alt and del...

I've literally just got safe mode up and running... and actually stable..
    mmm...

    whats going on???

    jay

whoops.. it just reset! i'm getting really hacked off with this now...
Cant even do a ruddy fresh install of xp.. as it kicks up an error message when i try to install it..

  4. Posssibly the ram is faulty. Maybe try swapping for some new ram and see if that helps.

freaky.. since the memory is brand new.... and dont forget the pcs been up and running with no probs for 12 hours.....

I was converting avi files to vob..... and it was kicking ass, doing them in about half the time my other pc used to do them in..

I've tried only having 1 module in.. and then swopping it....

just tried to do a fresh install of xp on a clean hd I have... and its just got to the bit..starting windows... (the install)
    and blue screen of death

A problem has been detected and windows.. yah yah yah..

I did some checking around and found 3 possibilities that could be causing you this headache. However, I'm sure there are more, but hopefully this will help:
    1. Underpowered PSU
    2. Corrupt registry
    3. 'Blaster' worm, or some variation thereof.
I did a search on Yahoo and, according to what I read, those are the 3 primary reasons for a PC to keep re-starting.
IF you could ever get to your desktop you could try going to MyComputer>properties>advanced>startup and recovery>settings and uncheck "automatically restart." That option may be feasible in 'safemode,' but I honestly don't know.

You might also try disabling caching and video shadowing in the BIOS.

What is the brand/wattage of the PSU? You might note the voltage in the PC health area of the BIOS and post what it says.

If you're set on doing a full reinstall you might use a tool like maxtors powermax to write zeros on all the sectors of the boot drive. Of course, backup all the data you want on the physical drive you want. This will ensure you don't have a virus or the like. And unplug your other drives as well, doing the install with just the boot drive.

According to microsoft you have bad RAM though.

sorted guys.. thank you all.... and you'll never guess what the problem is/was

2 strips of geil memory.. 512meg each...

    1 of them is fubar!!!!

tested them in dimm 3 and 4... and then just dimm 3 and whoa.. the ruddy hting boots..

so taking back both strips on the morrow... and getting another 2.

    cheers

Just one technical tip for you, man.

Just because something is "brand new" doesn't mean it can't be bad... future FYI next time you build another PC
