Hello everyone, I am interested in building my first gaming rig and Its quite a headache. So far I have managed to put together this list would you all help me by going over it and telling me what is not compatible or an obvious bad choice and why?

I'm just going to assume since I don't know this stuff 100% that I am leaving things out.. But I intentionally left out the things like OS Monitor and other external peripherals. I am mainly interested in getting the box built before I make an order.

Thanks again in advance for your time.

Looks pretty good. One thing I would change it the hard drive. I would get one with a 5 year warranty instead of a 3 year, but no huge deal. :-D

You could get the Antec 300 case, which is very simular for a little less $, but the 900 is a nice case.

Hmm, for gaming purposes here's some of the changes I'd make....

Instead of going with a huge harddrive, like the 640gb @ 7200RPM...I'd do two harddrives...
Putting your OS on a Raptor or Velociraptor @ 10,000RPM harddrive, and running all your media off a 7200RPM harddrive, you'll get better performance.

Also, I'm not a huge ATI fan...as ATI/AMD tends to run hotter then Intel chipsets, and Nvidia is supported by a wider audience of game developers than ATI. Basically, most of your games that are on the market are built for Nvidia.

I would also upgrade the power supply to 700w+ for future expansion...or if you decide to SLI.

For price comparison with Newegg try www.tigerdirect.com, they run a lot of specials and are a reliable internet wholesaler of computer parts and goods.
    Just my thoughts though.

With that mobo, I think I would stick to the ATI GPU's, especially for Crossfire. ;)

A bigger PSU would not be a bad idea in my opinion, but the one speced is rated to run Crossfire, so it should work.

Velociraptor drives would be sweet! Get 3, toss them in a striped RAID with parity! Nice! :drool

    :-D

Yeah, I was just referring to running an Intel build...like I said, Intel/Nvidia is much more supported, and you'll have fewer problems in the gaming world running them.

Cool I just got done building a gaming comp about a week ago so I am pretty familiar with the territory at this time.

I would have to agree with the intel chipsets remark. it would help a LOT if you could maybe give a budget that we could give suggestions based off of?? looks like you are going kind of middle road as far as that though. If you havent looked at a 750i mobo with the e7200 processor I would recommend doing that......unless you have the money to spend on a shiny new i7!!

    mobo-- http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188033

    processor-- http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115052

along with these you would need a graphics card that runs on intel, so proboably go the way of a 9800gtx which is comparable to the 4850 performance wise. If you got some more cash, the gtx 260 is real fast.

As far as the case goes...its great has great fans and is pretty quiet....it is the same one I used. I would for sure recommend getting this power supply--

    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006&Tpk=750tx

It is a Corsair made and has gotten GREAT reviews...it is also the one I have and it is 750 watts, so unless you are doing something REALLY serious it covers it.

I agree with BlueFalconLoyd when it comes to getting a 10,000 hard drive such as the raptor for your operating system. You have to remember that your HARD DRIVE is the single SLOWEST component in your system. upgrading that will make everything else seem to run faster, and you will not be disappointed. It seems like a lot of money for nothing, but really the 10,00 rpm hard drives affect overall system performance way more than you would think. It may even be worth it so slightly sacrifice some other component if you have to. But that is definitely your call in the end.

As far as the western digital se16, it is pretty much one of the best, if not the best, 7200 rpm hard drives. That exact model I also own, and let me tell you its pretty fast, and REALLY quiet.

No prob with the ram, corsair is great.

One other less-known site is microcenter.com if you live in an area where they have one of the retail stores, you must go to them and have a look. They are, for me, the best retailer for computer components around. Also, they have the Antec 900 and the corsair 750tx power supply for substantially cheaper than newegg, so check them out.

Looks like you did a real good job overall. Good luck on your build!

Thanks everyone for the posts... As far as amd/ati or intel/nvidea goes.. I really have no preference either way I just chose what I did based on reading pages on the web saying this was good that wasn't. I currently use a PIV now so using intel based isn't out of the question..

My budget for this system, I would like to keep under 1300 before i get the monitor and O/S which Ill be doing separately.

Wow thats actually a bigger budget than I thought you were on....If you are really willing to spend all 1300 of those dollars, then you could really go a bit further.......especially on the processor and hard drive.

    Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

    HDD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136033

You could get a bigger version of this drive...but I would recommend getting this one just for a the operating system and MAYBE a few games....but then get your other hard drive you mentioned for storage.

Of course, i spent only slightly over 1300 dollars to build my new intel core i7 rig, which is basically the fastest processor around. Also, the RAM controller for the i7 is built right onto the chip unlike previous ones, so basically it makes the RAM twice as fast. This REALLY speeds up current, but most importantly future computer use. And microcenter.com has i7 processors for like 220 bucks right now, its nuts.

If you want more info on a build like that, which would basically eat your current proposed build alive, let me know and I can give specifics. Just be aware that an i7 processor would require that you also get different RAM and motherboard: It is incompatible with what you now have.

Oh one more nice thing about the i7 motherboards is that you can use either the AMD/ATI graphics cards or the Nvidia, no matter if you sli or whatever. Just an added bonus.

$1300 omg, I would start looking all over agin, this time start loading the pages with Highest price first lol.

I live in the UK but that is about £800. I just built mine for £650 with monitor as well.

I have the 9800gt which is nice and quick with the E8500 C2D running. I can run all games out at the moment on highest resolution with no problems.

Defiantly get a bigger PSU. you will regret it if you don't.
