My computer has crashed and I get a blue screen that says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut to prevent
    to your computer
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
    these steps:

"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is
identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check
with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video
    adapters.

"Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable
BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need
to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then
    select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0x85733FD1, 0x8CDC4600, 0x00000000)

Collecting data for crash dump ...
Initializing disk for crash dump ...
    Begininning dump of physical memory.
Dumping physical memory to disk: "

Then it starts a count and when it gets to 100 (quite quickly) it crashes again and this just keeps on repeating.

What, if anything, can I do?

Unfortunately these errors are pretty difficult to troubleshoot as you PC is basically throwing its toys out the pram and saying "IM BROKE BUT IM NOT GOING TO TELL YOU WHY!!!!!"

There are a few common problems though. I am at work and dont have time to formulate a full reply but try to think of any new hardware/software that you have installed lately.

Also remove all your peripherals. Anything that plugs into USB... External Hard disks, WIFI, printer and see if it boots. then plug them back in one at a time until it fails and you may have identified the problem.

    Speak later.

    Thanks Tueur

I'm not aware of anything new but will try what you suggest. I'd be grateful if you could think of anything else I could try.

    No Worries.

There is plenty but it will take best part of an hour to write and I dont have time while at work. Will post back later tonight with a detailed trouble shooting guide.

OK, as previously stated these Blue Screen of Deaths can be caused by a great many thing includeing but not limited to faulty hardware, corrupt software, bad drivers and malware... in short, anything. There are some common causes though. For the purposes of this post I am assuming that you are using a desktop. It doesn't matter either way but may make hardware troubleshooting a little more difficult. I have encountered this error three times. Once was a faulty external HD, once was overheating and the other was a faulty WIFI dongle.

So to make the whole process a lot easier unplug absolutely everything from your PC excluding your mouse and keyboard and boot it up. If you have no error you know the problem lies with one of your external device. You can then plug them in one at a time and leave it running for a while until your system falls over. This will identify the problematic device.

If the problem persists then try testing your memory.
Download and install Active@ ISO burner from here
Download the memtest86 ISO image from here
Unzip the ISO image and save it somewhere on your PC. Next burn the image to CD using Active@ ISO burner. Put the disk in the CD drive and restart your PC.

You will need to look in your system BIOS to make sure that your CD drive is the first boot device. You can usually access your BIOS by pressing delete when you first turn your PC on.

Once your CD Drive is your first boot device then you PC will boot from the memtest86 CD and test your RAM. I would recomend that you leave it running over night. Note that this program will never finish. It just keeps repeating the test over and over.

If this reports no errors then click here to download the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Image.
Burn this image to CD using Active@ ISO burner and then boot from the CD as per the memtest86 bootable CD. Follow the steps on screen to test your hard disk for errors.

If this still fails then I would recomend testing your Power Suply Unit (PSU). The only true way to test is by replaceing it with a known good supply but you can test it with a electronic multimeter (its just not 100%) if you get to this stage then please post back.

    Good luck!

    Thanks Tueur
I have only just got access to a pc to download the files you suggest.
I can't download anything form the link
"Download the memtest86 ISO image from here"
I just get an about:blank page.
I googled it and got memtest.org but i don't know what - if anything - I should download from there. Sorry, but I am pretty useless with these things.
I'll try tonight to see if it will boot with everything unplugged and if not try to access the system BIOS and see if that alt least will work. In the meantime is there some other way to get the right memtest86 file?
    Thanks again for your help.
